Baby Shark Crochet Hat Pattern
If your child doesn’t like wearing sun hats or you’re looking for a crochet gift idea that will be loved by babies, toddlers, kids AND their parents, you’re going to love this super practical, unique, fun, adorable Baby Shark Crochet Hat with a brim. Finally a sun hat that kids want to wear! Great for summer as the brim keeps the sun out of their eyes. It’s a terrific crochet gift idea as you can make the crochet hat for a boy or a girl. Add it to your crochet animal hats collection!

The pattern is ideal for beginners, perfect for learning how to crochet a hat. It uses worsted weight yarn (4) and double crochet stitches to make the hat. It works up really quickly…you can probably complete the hat and brim in less than two episodes of Paw Patrol (that’s how I measure time these days).
The only stitches you need to know are double crochet, single crochet, half double crochet, slip stitch and chain. It is worked from the top down, in the round. It’s so fast and easy it practically sings…
Baby Shark doo doo doo doo doo doo, is now a sun hat doo doo doo doo doo doo, fun to crochet crochet doo doo doo doo, keeps sun away doo doo doo doo. #sorrynotsorry 🙂

The pictures are of my baby shark at 5 months. Want to know the only good thing to come from a teething baby? The inspiration for this hat!
The pattern is written in English for right-handed crochet using standard US crochet terminology. If you are more familiar with UK terminology, check out my US to UK Crochet Terms Conversion Chart.

Oh wait..somebody was jealous that I was taking pictures of baby shark and not him so he laid right down and posed for the camera…

Sizes
The pattern includes sizes for a baby (3-12 months), toddler (1 -3 years) and child (3-5 years). You can make the crochet hat bigger or smaller by changing your hook size.
Please note: Sizing really depends on what yarn you choose. I chose Patons Canadiana. It’s really stretchy so there is lots of flexibility when it comes to sizing. It’s also super soft and perfect for a crochet sun hat/summer hat. It’s labeled worsted weight (4) yarn but it’s very light compared to some of the more heavier worsted weight yarns. I would highly recommend a very light worsted weight yarn similar to Patons Canadiana. And make sure to check your gauge before starting (more info below).
Materials
Yarn:
- For the hat, brim and fin: Patons Canadiana. The size of the skein is 3.5 oz / 100 g. You only need less than half a skein. A skein is 187 m / 205 yards. The color I used is Pale Grey Mix.
- For the white teeth and specs on the eyes: Bernat Baby Sport in White (100% Acrylic, 12.3 oz / 350g) just a couple meters are needed.
- For the black eyes: Loops & Threads Impeccable in Back (100% acrylic, 4.5 oz / 127.5 g) only 1 meter is needed.
Crochet Hook Size: H/8 (5.00 mm) for the hat, brim, fin and eyes (or size needed to get the size you would like) and F/5 (3.75 mm) for the teeth
Other materials: scissors, yarn needle and stitch marker (no stuffing is required for the fin)
Gauge
A 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm) swatch (worked flat, not in the round) made with double crochet stitches = 13 double crochet stitches and 7 rows.
If you need help understanding gauge in crochet, check out my step by step guide to Crochet Gauge.
Abbreviations
- st = stitch
- sts = stitches

Pattern Notes (For All Sizes)
- The hat is worked in the round from the top down
- The chain 2 at the end of every round does not count as a stitch
- Join rounds with a slip stitch into the top of first double crochet stitch, not the chain.
- If you need help creating a magic ring/circle, Crochet365KnitToo has a great step by step photo tutorial here.
- Use only one strand of yarn (some hats call for two so I wanted to clarify)

Baby Shark Sun Hat Teeth (All Sizes)
Teeth Notes:

- I made 10 teeth, alternating a small tooth then a big tooth.
- 10 teeth go over 21 stitches.
- Attach the teeth on the opposite side of the hat from where you last joined (where you fastened off the brim) – Find the center and count approximately 10 stitches to the left
- The teeth are worked from right to left with the back of the hat facing you.
- Work the teeth into the bottom loops of the brim only (if the hat was being worn, the loops closest to the ground)

Teeth Instructions:
Attach white yarn to the bottom loop of the brim with a slip stitch.
*Small tooth = ch 3, sl st into 2nd ch from hook, sc into 3rd ch from hook.
Skip the next stitch and attach to brim on the following st with a sl st.
Large tooth = ch 4, sl st into 2nd ch from hook, sc into 3d ch from hook, hdc into 4th ch from hook.
Skip the next stitch and attach to brim on the following st with a sl st.*
Repeat * to * until there are 10 teeth. Fasten off and weave in loose ends.

- Use H/8 (5.00 mm) hook
- Use grey yarn
- The fin is worked in a continuous spiral

Fold hat in half and sew in the middle of the top in line with the center of the teeth.

Baby Shark Sun Hat Eyes (All Sizes)
With black yarn and H/8 (5.00 mm) hook, create magic ring. Ch 1. Hdc 8 times into ring. Join with sl st into first hdc. Fasten off and leave a tail to sew onto hat.
With a strand of white yarn and your yarn needle make a “spec” in the eye close to the edge around the upper left side by going through bottom of eye with needle, going over one hdc and back through. Weave in ends.
Attach eyes on the second last row of dc on the hat (not the brim) in line with the ends of the teeth.
