Crochet Bunny Lovey
Learn how to crochet a bunny lovey with this irresistibly cute Bunny Lovey Crochet Pattern. This easy crochet lovey is soft, snuggly and makes a really special handmade baby gift. Whether you’re looking for a crochet baby lovey pattern for a newborn baby, a crochet baby shower gift, or a fun Easter crochet project, this adorable lovey is sure to be treasured for years.

Both my daughters had bunny loveys when they were babies and they still have them today. I know firsthand how special loveys are and this pattern is especially meaningful to me. I have the fondest memories of my baby girls snuggling with their loveys.

I first designed this pattern using size 4 (medium) yarn and completely fell in love with it. I wondered what it would look like with size 6 (super bulky) yarn so I tried following the same steps using size 6 blanket yarn and I was blown away by the results — it was cuteness overload! Then I tried it with a size 3 (light) yarn (that was thicker than most brands of size 3 yarn) and again, it turned out beautifully. Other than using a different hook size for some parts and cutting longer strands of yarn for the facial features, which is explained in the instructions, the steps are exactly the same whether you use size 4 yarn, a thicker size 3 yarn or size 6 yarn.

My goal with this lovey pattern was to make it extremely easy-to-follow. You’ll find detailed written instructions as well as several diagrams throughout. There is also a comprehensive step-by-step video tutorial that shows how to crochet this lovey from start to finish.

Whether this is your first crochet lovey or you’re looking for a simple, cute and fun baby crochet pattern, this easy bunny lovey works up quickly and makes such a thoughtful baby gift that is sure to become a very cherished keepsake.

Pattern Details
Skill Level
Easy
Size
The pattern creates a lovey that is approx. (from top of ears to blanket bottom):
- With size 4 (medium) yarn: 10” tall.
- With size 6 (super bulky) yarn: 18” tall.
The pattern includes instructions for adjusting the blanket size.

Yarn Details
For the lovey ears, head and blanket, you can use any size 4 (medium) yarn* or any size 6 (super bulky) yarn.
*You can also use a thicker size 3 (light) yarn such as Patons Astra. If you do, follow all the instructions as if it were a size 4 (medium) yarn.
Facial Features (All Yarn Weights)
No matter which yarn weight you use for the lovey, the facial features are made with size 4 (medium) yarn.
All yarn amounts are approximate.
A) Eyes, Nose & Mouth:
Use a dark-colored size 4 (medium) yarn. You will need:
• For a lovey made with size 4 (medium) yarn: 3 yds.
• For a lovey made with size 6 (super bulky) yarn: 4 yds.
B) Eye Highlight:
Use a white size 4 (medium) yarn. You will need 1 yd (for either yarn weight).
For the facial features (for both yarn weights), I used Impeccable yarn by Loops & Threads in the colors A) “Thunder” and B) “White.” This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz / 127.5 g.
Size 4 (Medium) Yarn Lovey
A lovey made with size 4 (medium) yarn will be approx. 10” tall. The blanket is approx. 10” across. Finished size may vary depending on the yarn used and your tension.

You will need 140 yds in total (45 yds for the ears and the head and 95 yds for the blanket).
I used Patons Astra in the color “Hot Lilac.” This yarn is labeled size 3 (light), but I find it works similarly to a size 4 (medium) yarn. It is 100% acrylic. A skein is 161 yds / 147 m and 1.75 oz / 50 g. I used 1 skein.
Size 6 (Super Bulky) Yarn Lovey
A lovey made with size 6 yarn will be approx. 18” tall. The blanket is approx. 18” across. Note: Using size 6 yarn can be more difficult because the stitches are harder to see.

You will need 190 yds in total (65 yds for the ears and the head and 125 yds for the blanket).
I used Bernat Baby Blanket in the color “Baby Lilac.” This yarn is size 6 (super bulky) and 100% polyester. A skein is 220 yds / 201 m and 10.5 oz / 300 g. I used 1 skein.
Other Materials
Crochet Hook Sizes:
- For size 4 (medium) yarn: G/7 (4.50 mm) and K/10.5 (6.50 mm).
- For size 6 (super bulky) yarn: I/9 (5.50 mm) and K/10.5 (6.50 mm).
Other Materials: A stitch marker, polyester stuffing (for the head), a yarn needle, a measuring tape and scissors.
Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- approx. = approximately
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- dc = double crochet
- dc2tog = double crochet two together
- hdc = half double crochet
- inv sc2tog = See Special Stitch
- sc = single crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- sk = skip
- sp/sps = space/spaces
- st/sts = stitch/stitches

Gauge
As long as the stitches on the head are tight (so the stuffing doesn’t come through), exact sizing is not important.
Feel free to adjust your hook size based on your yarn and tension. A smaller hook is used for the head to create tight stitches. A larger hook is used for the blanket so the fabric drapes nicely.
For reference, my completed ear measured:
- With size 4 (medium) yarn: 1.5” wide and 3” high.
- With size 6 (super bulky) yarn: 2” wide and 5” high.
When making the blanket, after Blanket Round 2, my work measured:
- With size 4 (medium) yarn: 2.75” across.
- With size 6 (super bulky) yarn: 4” across.
Safety Note
- Ensure all embroidered features are securely attached and regularly check the lovey for loose stitches, wear or damage.
Special Stitch
When making the head, I recommend making inv sc2tog sts instead of regular sc2tog sts (also called sc decreases), as they create a neater finish and more closely resemble regular sc stitches. Here’s how to do it:
Invisible Single Crochet Two Together (inv sc2tog) = Insert your hook in the front loop only (the loop closest to you) of the next st. Don’t yarn over. Insert your hook into the front loop only of the next st. Yarn over and pull the yarn through both sts (two loops on your hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through the two loops on your hook. This completed inv sc2tog counts as 1 st.
Stitch Explanation
When making the blanket, you will make dc2tog sts (also called dc decreases). If this st is new to you, here’s how to do it:
Double Crochet Two Together (dc2tog) =
Yarn over. Insert your hook into the next st. Yarn over and pull through a loop (3 loops on your hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (2 loops on your hook). Yarn over and insert your hook into the next st. Yarn over and pull through a loop (4 loops on your hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (3 loops on your hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through the 3 loops on your hook. This completed dc2tog counts as 1 st.

Pattern Instructions
Bunny Ears & Head Pattern Notes
- The bunny ears and the bunny head are worked in a continuous spiral without joining rounds with a slip stitch.
- Do not make any chains or turn your work at the beginning or end of any round.
- Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
- At the start of a new round, remove the stitch marker, work into the stitch, and then place a stitch marker in that first stitch to mark the start.
- Always work in the first stitch – if the pattern says “in the next st” and it’s the first stitch of the round, work into that first stitch.
Bunny Ears Instructions
Make two ears first (before making the head).
For size 4 (medium) yarn: use a G/7 (4.50 mm) hook.
For size 6 (super bulky) yarn: use an I/9 (5.50 mm) hook.
Ear Start: Make a Magic Circle.
Ear Round 1: Make 6 sc into the Magic Circle.
Reminder: Always place a stitch marker in the first st made in the round to mark the start.
Pull the end of the Magic Circle tight to close. (6 sc sts)
Reminders: Never turn. Always work into the first st.
Ear Rounds 2 – 4: Sc in each st around. (6 sc sts)
Tip: Weave in your starting tail after completing Ear Round 2.
Ear Round 5: *Sc in the next st. In the next st, 2 sc.*
Repeat from * to * around. (9 sc sts)
Ear Rounds 6 – 8: Sc in each st around. (9 sc sts)
Ear Round 9: *Sc in the next 2 sts. In the next st, 2 sc.*
Repeat from * to * around. (12 sc sts)
Ear Rounds 10 – 12: Sc in each st around. (12 sc sts)
After completing Round 12, sl st into the first st to join.
Fasten off, leaving a 36” long ending tail.
Set the two completed ears aside.
Bunny Head Instructions
For size 4 (medium) yarn: use a G/7 (4.50 mm) hook.
For size 6 (super bulky) yarn: use an I/9 (5.50 mm) hook.
Head Start: Make a Magic Circle.
Head Round 1: Make 6 sc into the Magic Circle.
Reminder: Always place a stitch marker in the first st made in the round to mark the start.
Pull the end of the Magic Circle tight to close.
(6 sc sts)
Reminders: Never turn. Always work into the first st.
Head Round 2: Make 2 sc in each st around.
(12 sc sts)
Head Round 3: *Sc in the next st. In the next st, 2 sc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(18 sc sts)
Head Round 4: *Sc in the next 2 sts. In the next st, 2 sc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(24 sc sts)
Tip: Weave in your starting tail at this point.
Head Round 5: *Sc in the next 3 sts. In the next st, 2 sc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(30 sc sts)
Head Rounds 6 – 12: Sc in each st around. (30 sc sts)
After completing Head Round 12, do not fasten off. Pause here and complete the following steps in order: 1) Attach ears 2) Create facial features 3) Fill with stuffing. You will then resume crocheting the head.
Attach the Ears
Note: The ears are not stuffed.
Shape the Ear: Fold the ear flat and pinch the bottom. Using the ear’s 36″ ending tail and a yarn needle, sew through all layers of the pinched section to secure (sew down and up twice). The inward dent created by the pinch is the front of the ear.
Ear Placement: Attach the ears where Head Round 2 begins, placing one ear on each side of the head. There is no specific front or back of the head. I placed my ears so the dented pinch (the front of the ear) faces the side opposite the stitch marker.
Attach the Ear: Using the ear’s ending tail and your yarn needle, sew the ear to the head by weaving the yarn in and out of the stitches from the last round of the ear. Work all the way around the ear, then repeat once more to secure. Weave in the ends.

Create Facial Features
Eyes
Cut a strand of dark colored size 4 (medium) yarn:
• Lovey with size 4 yarn: 36″ strand
• Lovey with size 6 yarn: 48″ strand
Eye placement: The eyes are made on the front of the head directly under each ear. The eyes start between Rounds 6 and 7 and end between Rounds 8 and 9 (counting from the top of the head). There are 6 stitches between the eyes.

Create the eyes: Thread the yarn onto a yarn needle.
From inside the head to outside, bring the needle through a stitch between Rounds 6 and 7, leaving an 8″ tail inside the head. Insert the needle from outside the head to inside through the stitch two rounds directly below (between Rounds 8 and 9). Pull the yarn through. This creates one “wrap.”
Repeat working in these same two stitches:
• Lovey with size 4 yarn: 5 “wraps” in total
• Lovey with size 6 yarn: 10 “wraps” in total
Tie the two yarn ends inside the head with a double knot and trim the excess.
Repeat for the second eye, leaving 6 stitches between the eyes.
Eye Highlight
Cut a 20″ strand of white size 4 yarn (whether you are using size 4 or size 6). Thread the yarn onto a yarn needle. From inside the head to outside, bring the needle out through the same stitch used for the top of the eye. Insert the needle into a stitch one strand to the side of the eye, crossing over one strand of the eye to create the highlight. Pull the yarn through. To thicken the highlight, repeat once more.
Tie the two yarn ends inside the head with a double knot and trim the excess.
Repeat for the second eye.

Nose/Mouth
Cut a strand of dark colored size 4 (medium) yarn:
• Lovey with size 4 yarn: 36″ strand
• Lovey with size 6 yarn: 48″ strand
Nose placement: The top of the nose starts between Rounds 8 and 9, centered between the eyes and ends between Rounds 9 and 10. The nose spans 3 stitches across.
Create the nose: From inside the head to outside, bring the needle through the center stitch between Rounds 8 and 9, leaving an 8″ tail inside the head.
- Insert the needle into the stitch one round directly below and pull the yarn through.
- Bring the needle up through the stitch to the left of the center stitch, then insert it again into the bottom center stitch.
- Repeat with the stitch to the right of the center stitch.
- Continue working across the three top stitches, always inserting the needle into the bottom center stitch, until the nose is completely filled.
Create the mouth: Once the nose is filled, bring the needle out through the bottom center stitch. Create the mouth by inserting the needle two rounds below (between Rounds 11 and 12) and pulling the yarn through. Repeat once more to thicken the line.
Tie the two yarn ends inside the head with a double knot and trim the excess.

Fill with Stuffing
Using small pieces of stuffing, fill the head. Do not overstuff. The head should be full, but the stuffing should not stretch the stitches or be visible through the fabric.
If necessary, continue adding small amounts of stuffing as you crochet the remaining rounds of the head.
Bunny Head (Continued)
Resume the head. Continue working from the last stitch of Head Round 12. You will now begin the decrease rounds. Use inv sc2tog sts to prevent unwanted holes (see Special Stitch).
Head Round 13: *Sc in the next 3 sts. Over the next 2 sts, inv sc2tog.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(24 sc sts)
Head Round 14: *Sc in the next 2 sts. Over the next 2 sts, inv sc2tog.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(18 sc sts)
Head Round 15: *Sc in the next st. Over the next 2 sts, inv sc2tog.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(12 sc sts)
If necessary, fill the head with more stuffing.
Head Round 16: *Over the next 2 sts, inv sc2tog.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(6 sc sts)
Sl st into the first st to join.
Fasten off leaving a 36” long ending tail.
With your yarn needle and the ending tail, sew across the 6 remaining stitches several times to completely close the hole.
Do not weave in or trim the 36” ending tail (you will use this tail to attach the head to the blanket).

Blanket Pattern Notes
- The blanket is worked in rounds. At the end of each round, you will join with a slip stitch.
- The joining slip stitch never gets worked into or counted as a stitch.
- Chains never count as stitches.
- Never turn at the start or end a round.
- Always work in the first stitch – if the pattern says “in the next st” and it’s the first stitch of the round, work into that first stitch.
- You may find it helpful to place a stitch marker in the first stitch made in every round.
- The blanket is designed to be slightly rippled. It’s normal for your work to curl as you work on it.
For both size 4 (medium) and size 6 (super bulky) yarn: use a K/10.5 (6.50 mm) hook. (You are welcome to adjust the hook size based on your personal preference, yarn and tension).

Size 6 (super bulky) yarn: 16” across.
Do not fasten off. Proceed to the Blanket Border.

How to Adjust the Blanket Size
You can proceed to the border after any round.
To make the blanket smaller, make fewer rounds.
To make the blanket larger, make additional rounds following these instructions for each round:
Ch 1.
*Over the next 2 sts, dc2tog.
Dc in the next ___ sts.
In the next st, 3 dc.
In the next st, 3 dc.
Dc in the next ___ sts.
Over the next 2 sts, dc2tog.*
Repeat from * to * around.
Sl st into the top of the first dc2tog to join.
Fill in the blanks with the following number of sts:
Round 9: Dc in the next 4 sts (128 sts total)
Round 10: Dc in the next 5 sts. (144 sts total)
Round 11: Dc in the next 6 sts. (160 sts total)
Round 12: Dc in the next 7 sts. (176 sts total)
You can continue in this manner.
Once you’ve reached your desired size, do not fasten off. Proceed to the Blanket Border.

Blanket Border
Use the same hook size as you did for the blanket.
If the border feels too tight, use a larger hook. If you want a tighter border, use a smaller hook.
Border Round 1: Ch 1 and turn (the wrong side will now be facing you).
Sk the first st (this is the joining sl st that never gets worked into).
*In the next st, sl st. In the next st, hdc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
Sl st into the top of the first sl st of the round to join.
(112 sts if you ended the blanket after Blanket Round 8. If you adjusted the size of the blanket, you should have the same number of sts as your final round of the blanket).
Fasten off and weave in the blanket’s loose ends.
Attach the Head to the Blanket
Head placement: The head gets attached to the blanket in between Blanket Rounds 1 and 2. When working into the head, work in between Head Rounds 14 and 15 (the second and third last rounds of the head).

Attach the head: Using the head’s 36” ending tail and your yarn needle, sew the head to the blanket by weaving the yarn in and out of the stitches. After working all the way around, weave in the loose end.

And now you have a new bunny lovey!
