Crochet Bunny Wall Hanging

This Bunny Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern is a fun and creative crochet project that makes a beautiful piece of handmade wall decor.

Crochet Bunny Decoration Pattern

The simple bunny silhouette, fringe bottom and pom pom tail create a charming design that looks lovely displayed in a nursery, kids’ room, playroom or anywhere you want to add a soft, whimsical touch. Hung from a wooden dowel (that you can pick up at a dollar store), this crochet bunny wall hanging adds personality to a space while still keeping a clean and modern look.

This crochet wall hanging pattern uses basic stitches and simple colorwork to create the bunny design, making it a relaxing project that works up faster than you might expect. Choose colors that match your home decor — soft pastels for spring, neutrals for a modern look or brighter shades for a playful space.

Crochet Easter Bunny Pattern

This bunny wall hanging also makes a lovely crochet Easter decoration that you can display anywhere in your home. Resembling an Easter Bunny hiding in the grass, it’s a wonderful piece of crochet Easter decor that is sure to get lots of “That’s so cute!” reactions.

Whether you’re decorating your home for Easter, creating nursery decor for a baby’s room or making a thoughtful handmade gift, this crochet bunny wall hanging pattern is a delightful project that results in a piece you’ll be really proud to show off.

Size

The pattern creates a wall hanging that fits on a 12” long dowel. The finished size is approximately 11” wide and 16.5” high (not including the tassels or the hanging strap).

Crochet Easter Pattern Bunny Wall Hanging

Materials

Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) yarn in two colors. For each wall hanging, you will need approximately:

  • Color A (used for the background, tassels & hanging strap): 150 yds.
  • Color B (used for the bunny, tassels & pom pom): 110 yds.

I used Soft Classic yarn by Loops & Threads. This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 354 yds / 324 m and 7 oz / 198 g. For each wall hanging, I used less than 1 skein of Color A and less than 1 skein of Color B.

I made three wall hangings and used a different Color A for each: “Mauve,” “Cornflower,” and “Sage.” For Color B, I used “Off White” for all three.

Crochet Hook Sizes: J/10 (6.00 mm) and H/8 (5.00 mm).

Other Materials: A 12” long circular dowel, a yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape. Optional: sand paper and stitch markers.

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart

Crochet Bunny Wall Hanging Pattern

Abbreviations

  • ch/chs = chain/chains
  • RS = right side
  • sc = single crochet
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • WS = wrong side

Gauge

As long as your work fits on your dowel, exact sizing is not important. For reference, 4” x 4” = 13 sc and 14 rows.

Crocheting With Two Colors

In this pattern, when instructed to use Color B (the bunny color), you will carry Color A (the background color) along the wrong side (the back) until instructed to use it again.

To ensure the strand of A doesn’t get too long as you carry it along the wrong side, catch/trap it every 4-6 stitches (this is called “catching A’s float”).

When instructed to use A again, you will drop B where it is – you don’t carry it to the end of the row. The rows are worked from right to left and then left to right so it will be in the correct place when you need it again on the following row.

Exception – Rows 13-28: When both bunny ears are worked at the same time, carry the unused color along the wrong side between the ears and catch/trap its float every 4–6 stitches.

Ensure that all strands are kept on the wrong side.

I have a detailed guide & video tutorial explaining when and how to change colors and how to catch/trap floats here: How to Crochet with Two Colors

Easter Crochet Pattern Wall Hanging

Pattern Notes

  • Once your starting chains are attached to the dowel, you simply ignore the dowel and crochet as normal. The first few rows may feel a little awkward as the dowel is close to your hands, but it becomes much easier as your work grows.
  • Each row has 35 stitches.
  • Ch 1 and turn at the start of every row.
  • Chains never count as stitches.
  • Always work in the first stitch (the stitch attached to the chain).
  • Stretch your work wide after each row.
  • When crocheting with two colors, always:
    • Add/switch colors before completing the last stitch of the old color when you have two loops on your hook. Place the new color on your hook and pull it through the two loops of the old color.
    • Catch the unused color’s float every 4-6 stitches.
    • Ensure all strands are kept on the wrong side.

Pattern Instructions

Below are the detailed written instructions. Further down there is a quick-reference guide with short form instructions as well as a pattern chart.

If your dowel is rough, use sandpaper to smooth it down. Your starting chs should be able to slide around on the dowel without getting caught on it.

Start: With a J/10 (6.00 mm) hook and Color A (the background color), make 35 chs loosely onto the dowel. (Don’t make them too tight as you will be working into them on the next row). Here’s how:

A) Make a slip knot and place it on your hook.

B) Hold the dowel vertically between your hook and skein so that it is in front of your working yarn.

C) Keeping your hook in front of the dowel, move it toward the yarn and yarn over.

D) Pull the yarn through the loop on your hook.

E) Your first starting chain is now made.

F) *Bring your working yarn to the back of the dowel.

G) Keeping your hook in front of the dowel, move it toward the yarn and yarn over.

H) Pull the yarn through the loop on your hook.

I) Your next starting chain is now made.*

J) Repeat from * to * until you have 35 starting chains.

Slide your chs down the dowel as they are made. Once 35 chs are made, center them on the dowel.

Start

Change to an H/8 (5.00 mm) hook and use it for the rest of the pattern.

Continue using Color A until instructed to change colors.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1 and turn.

Sc in the top loop of each ch across.

(Reminder: all rows have 35 sc sts and chs never count as sts).

Row 1

(Reminders: always ch 1 and turn at the start of each row. Always work into the first st.)

Row 2 (WS): Sc in each st across.

Rows 3 – 6: Repeat Row 2.

After Row 6, your work should measure 11” wide. If necessary, start again with a different hook size.

Crochet Bunny Nursery Decor Pattern

Row 7 (RS): With A, sc in the first 7 sts.

With B (the bunny color), sc in the next 2 sts.

With A, sc in the last 26 sts.

Here’s how to complete Row 7 step by step:

  • With A, ch 1 and turn. The RS/front is now facing you.
  • With A, sc in the first 6 sts (the first st and next 5 sts).
  • With A, insert your hook into the next st (the 7th st in the row). Yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on your hook). Place Color B on your hook and pull it through the two loops of A currently on your hook. Leave A hanging where it is.
  • With B, sc in the next st (the 8th st in the row).
  • With B, insert your hook into the next st (the 9th st in the row). Yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on your hook). Pick up A from where it was hanging and place it on your hook. Pull A through the two loops of B currently on your hook.
  • Leave B hanging where it is (you will pick it up again on the next row).
  • With A, sc in the last 26 sts (sc in each st until the end of the row).
  • Stitch count after completing Row 7: 33 sc sts with A + 2 sc sts with B = 35 sc sts.

Hanging Strap

Use an H/8 (5.00 mm) hook and Color A.

The instructions below make a strap that is 14” long. To adjust the length, make more or less starting chs (any number – there’s no multiple required).

Strap Start: Ch 61.

Strap Row 1: In the second ch from the hook, sl st.

Sl st in each ch across.

(60 sl sts)

Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

Place one end of the dowel into the first st and the other end into the last st (these sts are tight – you can put your hook or a yarn needle in first to stretch them).

Crochet Easter Project Bunny Wall Hanging

Tassels/Fringe

Preparing Your Yarn:

Cut strands of yarn that are 16″ long. You can make the tassels shorter or longer by cutting smaller or bigger strands.

You will need:
• Color A (the background color): 16 strands
• Color B (the bunny color): 38 strands

Tassels alternate between using 2 strands of yarn and 1 strand of yarn.

Tip for cutting the strands: find an object that is 8” wide (a piece of cardboard, a notebook, etc). Wrap your yarn around the 8” object 16 times for Color A and 38 times for Color B (each wrap = 1 strand). Cut the yarn in half.

Where to Attach Tassels:

Attach tassels along the bottom of the wall hanging, in each stitch of the final row and using the same color as the last stitch.

In the first stitch, attach a tassel made with 2 strands of yarn.
*In the next stitch, attach a tassel made with 1 strand. In the next stitch, attach a tassel made with 2 strands.*
Repeat from * to * across that color section.

Where to Attach Tassels

How to Attach Tassels:

A) With the RS of the wall hanging facing you, insert your hook from back to front into the stitch. Take the tassel strands for that stitch (either 1 strand or 2 strands), fold them in half, and place the folded center on your hook.

B) With your hook, pull the folded ends through the stitch (which creates a loop).

C) Pull the ends through the loop.

D) Pull tight to make a knot.

Tassels

Once all tassels are attached, trim the strands to make them all one length – you can use scissors or a rotary cutter. Learn how to trim the ends perfectly. I trimmed mine to be 4” long.

Tassels

Optional: To prevent fraying ends, tie a small knot at the end of each strand.

Bunny Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern

Pom Pom

Make a 2.5” x 2.5” pom pom with Color B. You can use your favorite method to create a pom pom such as using a Pom Pom Maker or follow the directions below to make a pom pom using the “cardboard method.”

Pom Pom Making Set Up:

Cut a piece of cardboard (the thicker the better) that is 3″ wide and 2″ high.

On the side, 1” down from the top, cut a slit that is 2″ wide. The slit should be approximately 0.25″ high.

Cardboard pom pom

Pom Pom Making Instructions:

With the slit of the cardboard on your right side, leave a 12” starting tail and wrap the yarn vertically around the top and bottom of the cardboard piece. Do not wrap past the slit opening, as it will be needed later.

Wrap yarn around cardboard approximately 50 times.

Cut the yarn, leaving a 24″ ending tail. Using this 24″ ending tail, wrap it horizontally around the center of the wrapped yarn a few times, inserting the yarn through the slit each time. Using both tails, pull tightly and tie a secure knot.

Slide the yarn bundle off the cardboard and turn it over. Using the two tails, tie tightly again on the opposite side to secure the center.

Cut through the looped ends all the way around. Do not cut the 24″ tail. Trim the pom-pom evenly around to shape it.

Attach the Pom Pom:

Using the 24″ tail and a yarn needle, attach the pom-pom to the RS of the wall hanging, centered on the 6th row from the bottom. Weave in loose ends.
