Size
The pattern creates an ear warmer that is 20” wide and 4” high (prior to assembly). You can easily adjust the size. Instructions are included in the pattern.

Materials
Yarn: Any size 5 (bulky) yarn. You will need approximately 65 yds for each ear warmer.
I used Bernat Velvet yarn in the color “Misty Gray.” This yarn is size 5 (bulky) and 100% polyester. A skein is 315 yds / 288 m and 300 g / 10.5 oz.
Crochet Hook Size: I/9 (5.50 mm).
Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape. Optional: stitch markers.
Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.

Abbreviations
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- dc = double crochet
- RS = right side
- sc = single crochet
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- WS = wrong side
Gauge
4” x 4” = 12 sts (counting both sc and dc sts) and 10 rows following the pattern. To make a swatch, ch 18 and follow the pattern.
Measurements are provided throughout the pattern.
I recommend starting to measure after Row 4. If after Row 4 your work is measuring differently, start again with a different hook size or a different number of starting chs (see “How to Adjust the Size”).
Pattern Notes
- Chains never count as stitches.
- Always work into the first stitch (the stitch attached to the chain).
- Make the stitches in brackets in the same chain or stitch. For example, “In the next ch, (sc, dc),” means to make a single crochet and double crochet in the same chain.
- You may find it helpful to place a stitch marker in the first stitch made in each row.
How to Adjust the Size
The number of starting chains determines the width and the number of rows determines the height. To adjust the width, make more or less starting chains in multiples of 2 (meaning that you will need an even number of starting chains). To adjust the height, make more or less rows.

Rows 3 – 10: Repeat Row 2.
Your work should measure:
- After Row 4: 20” wide and 2” high.
- After Row 7: 20” wide and 3” high.
- After Row 10: 20” wide and 4” high.
You can repeat Row 2 more or less times. End after any row.
After finishing Row 10 (or after reaching your desired height), fasten off leaving a 12” ending tail. Weave in the starting tail. Proceed to the “Assembly” instructions.
Assembly Instructions
Diagrams show a different ear warmer so it’s easier to see.
A) Turn your work. The 12” ending tail will be on your top right. Put your yarn needle on the ending tail.
B) Fold the ends toward the middle.
C) Make the left-end a “C” and the right-end a backward “C”.
D) Interlock the ends. The layers should be in this order from top to bottom:
- The top of the right-end
- The top of the left-end
- The bottom of the right-end
- The bottom of the left-end

Sewing Instructions
A) Hold the four layers together.
B) With the 12” ending tail and your yarn needle, sew down through three layers.
C) From now on, sew through all four layers. Sew up and then down all the way across.
D) Once you’ve sewn across, sew up and down through all four layers back to the start.

Turn your work inside out so the front of the twist is on the outside.
Optional: Continue sewing around the front of the twist to ensure the inside stays hidden.
Weave in the loose end.

And now you have a new ear warmer!
