If you are searching for a continuous granny square blanket pattern, you have come to the right place! This infinity granny square blanket is one of my absolute favorite crochet blankets to make. It’s a classic crochet blanket that’s always in style.

I made this continuous granny square baby blanket when I was pregnant with my first daughter. It was such a special baby blanket that she would snuggle up with in her bassinet. Then it was passed down to my second daughter who is now three and still sleeps with it in her crib!

I’m very excited to share this pattern with you. There are lots of variations of how to crochet a continuous granny square blanket and everyone makes them a little differently.

In this tutorial, I will show you how I make an infinity granny square blanket and how to add a border with lovely little shells, which really completes the look.

This is a very easy pattern that is fun and simple to make. It’s great for beginners learning how to crochet a granny square blanket. The pattern includes step-by-step written instructions but if you are new to crochet or get confused at anytime, there’s a full video tutorial showing you exactly how to make this granny square blanket.

If you are looking for a fast blanket pattern, you’ll love how quickly this blanket works up. I made two in one weekend! Once you complete the first few rounds, the pattern repeats the same round over and over making it the perfect mindless and relaxing crochet project.

I chose to use three colors throughout the pattern and I changed colors every two rounds. The color combinations are endless and I would love to see what you come up with!

The border is also very easy. Unlike most blanket borders, you don’t need to guess where to “crochet evenly down the sides” as you’ll be working in each stitch around. Even weaving in the ends is simple as there are great natural places to hide the tails.

The yarn you should use for a granny square blanket depends on what you’ll be using the blanket for. If you are making this pattern for a baby blanket, I recommend using a size 3 (light) yarn, which creates a light, airy, cuddly blanket that flows nicely. If you are making this pattern as a car seat or stroller blanket or as a lapghan or throw, I recommend using a size 4 (medium) yarn, which creates a thicker, heavier and more dense blanket.

For this pattern, you can use either size 3 or size 4 yarn. The size yarn that you use will determine the blanket’s size, which crochet hook you should use and the amount of yarn required (more details below).

Size

With size 3 (light) yarn, the pattern creates a blanket that is approx. 30” x 30” (with the border and 27” x 27” without the border).

With size 4 (medium) yarn, the pattern creates a blanket that is approx. 33” x 33” (with the border and 29” x 29” without the border).

These are average crochet baby blanket sizes.

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart. 

Materials

Recommended Crochet Hook Sizes:

For size 3 (light) yarn: H/8 (5.00 mm). 

For size 4 (medium) yarn: I/9 (5.50 mm).

Other Materials: yarn needle and scissors. Optional: measuring tape. 

Yarn

For this pattern, you can use either size 3 (light) yarn or size 4 (medium) yarn – the instructions are the same for both. If you are using multiple colors, ensure all colors are either all size 3 or all size 4 (don’t mix yarn weights).

Size 3 (light) Yarn:

Using size 3 yarn creates a light, airy blanket that flows nicely – great for a baby blanket. 

You will need approx. 750 yds of size 3 yarn in total. 

I used Snuggly Wuggly by Loops & Threads. This yarn is size 3 (light) and 100% acrylic. A skein of this yarn is 446 yds / 408 m and 5 oz / 141 g. 

Amounts of yarn (approx.) required* and colors used: 

A) “Pale Blue” – 160 yds for the blanket body + 170 yds for the border = 330 yds in total (3/4 of a skein of Snuggly Wuggly) 

B) “Light green” – 200 yds (1/2 skein of Snuggly Wuggly) 

C) “Soft Lillac” – 220 yds (1/2 skein of Snuggly Wuggly)

Size 4 (Medium) Yarn:

Using size 4 (medium) yarn creates a larger, thicker, heavier and more dense blanket – great for a stroller, car seat, lapghan or throw.

You will need approx. 855 yds of size 4 yarn in total.

I used Impeccable by Loops and Threads. This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein of this yarn is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz and 127.5 g. 

Amounts of yarn (approx.) required* and colors used:

A) “Claret” – 175 yds for the blanket body + 200 yds for the border = 375 yds in total (1 & 1/4 skeins of Impeccable) 

B) “Pumpkin” – 230 yds (1 skein of Impeccable)

C) “Gold” – 250 yds (1 skein of Impeccable)

*Important! The amounts of yarn stated above are based on this exact pattern (from the start to the end of round 24 and then completing the border). If you make the blanket bigger, you will require more yarn as the blanket body grows with each additional round.

Abbreviations

• ch = chain
• st = stitch
• sts = stitches 
• sl st = slip stitch 
• sc = single crochet
• dc = double crochet 
• Ch-1 sp = chain 1 space
• Ch-2 sp = chain 2 space 

Gauge

With size 3 (light) yarn: 4” x 4” = 12 sts and 7 rounds following the pattern.

With size 4 (medium) yarn: 4” x 4” = 9 sts and 6 rounds following the pattern. 

Pattern Notes

• Every time you make 3 dc sts in the same space it counts as a cluster. Each round starts with chains and 2 dc sts, which counts as your first cluster. 
• You will change colors every two rounds. When changing colors, place new color on hook and pull the new color through the loop of the current/old color that is currently on your hook. Fasten off old color. Use the new color until instructed to change again.
• When the pattern has [instructions in brackets] x 3. This means to complete the instructions in the brackets a total of three times.

How to Crochet a Continuous Granny Square Blanket

Blanket Body Instructions

Start: With Color A, make a Magic Circle. Continue using A until instructed to change. 

Round 1: Ch 1. Make 2 dc in Magic Circle. Ch 2. [3 dc in Magic Circle. Ch 2.] x 3 (meaning to complete the instructions in brackets a total of 3 times. Pull Magic Circle tight to close. Sl st into top of first dc to join. (4 clusters made).

Round 2: Turn. Sl st in the ch-2 sp below. Ch 2. Make 2 dc in the same ch-2 sp below. [Ch 1. In next ch-2 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp.] x 3. Ch 1. In next ch-2 sp (the starting corner), make 3 dc. Ch 2. Sl st into top of first dc to join. (8 clusters made).

Round 3: Change colors: switch to B (reminder: always fasten off old color). Turn. Sl st in the ch-2 sp below. Ch 2. Make 2 dc in same ch-2 sp below. [Ch 1. In next ch-1 sp, make 3 dc. Ch 1. Round 5: Turn. Sl st in the ch-2 sp below. Ch 2. Make 2 dc in the same ch-2 sp below. [*Ch 1. In next ch-1 sp, make 3 dc.* Repeat from * to * across until corner. Ch 1. In next ch-2 sp (the corner), (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp.] x 3. *Ch 1. In next ch-1 sp, 3 dc.* Repeat across until corner. Ch 1. In next ch-2 sp (the starting corner), 3 dc. Ch 2. Sl st into top of first dc to join. 

(Round 5 has 20 clusters made). 

Rounds 6 – 24: Repeat Round 5 for the rest of the pattern. The table below indicates which color to use for each round and the number of clusters made at the end of each round. 

If you want to make the blanket bigger, you can continue repeating Round 5 until you reach your desired size. You can start the border after any number of rounds. 

On your last round before the border, make your chain stitches loosely as you will work into them on Round 1 of the border.

Blanket Border Instructions

Border Note:

• Always work into the first stitch in the round (the stitch attached to the chain) except when instructed to skip it. 

Attach the color you want for the border (I used A for the entire border) and fasten off C.

Round 1: Do not turn. Ch 1. Sc in each st around. (Work into the tops of dc sts.  When working into the chain sts, insert hook under the top two loops and sc normally.). Sl st into the top of the first sc st to join. 

In the next round, you will be making 3 sc in the corner st (for all 4 corners). The corner stitch is the stitch that is closest to the corner. 

Round 2: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each st around, making 3 sc in the corner stitch for all 4 corners. Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.

Round 3: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each st around, making 3 sc in the corner stitch for all 4 corners (the middle st of the 3 sc made in the corner in the previous round). Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.

Round 4: Ch 2. Do not turn. Dc in each st around, making 3 dc in the corner stitch for all 4 corners (the middle st of the 3 sc made in the corner in the previous round). Sl st into the top of the first dc to join.

Note: Depending on your yarn, you may want to go down 1 or 2 hook sizes for Round 5 to make the shells (4 sc in the same st) smaller. 

Round 5: Ch 1. Do not turn. Ch 1. Skip the 1st st (the st attached to the chain). *Sl st into the next st. Make 4 sc into the next st (shell created). Skip the next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (Nothing special happens at the corners).

As you approach the first shell made, you’ll want to have a sl st between it and your last shell. If you don’t have the right number of sts, back up and don’t skip a stitch after a shell to make it work.

After your last sl st, fasten off and weave in all loose ends. 

And now you have a new Granny Square Blanket!
