Crochet Christmas Patterns
I look forward to decorating for Christmas all year long. Over the years, I’ve started to make more and more crochet Christmas decorations and it fills my heart with joy as these festive pillows, tissue box covers, wine bottle holders and mug cozies get placed around the house.

Crochet Christmas Tree Patterns
At first, my Christmas patterns were mostly inspired by Santa’s belt. Now I’ve been adding more and more crochet Christmas tree patterns.

Like this Christmas Tree Dishcloth pictured above.

One of my absolute favorite Christmas patterns is my Christmas Tree Hat.

Our whole family wore one in our annual Christmas card! (Except Charlie who wore his Santa Bandana).
That Christmas Tree Hat was so much fun to make that I decided to make a similar Christmas Tree Pillow!
Crochet Christmas Pillows
This Christmas Tree Pillow will be added to my collection of crochet Christmas Pillows, which includes:

This easy Christmas Crochet Pillow.

And this Snowman Pillow.
Crochet Christmas Tree Pillow
I am really excited to share this new Crochet Christmas Tree Pillow Pattern.

Here’s why I think you’ll love it:
- It’s a really fun project that involves colorwork, bobbles and alternating stitches.
- The alternating stitches (single crochet and treble/triple crochet stitches) creates a very realistic “tree” texture.
- The bobbles and rows of red and yellow decorate the tree with lights with ornaments.
- There’s an adorable star that gets added to the top of the tree.
- The pillow cover is removable – great for washing and easy storage after the holidays.
- The pattern includes step-by-step instructions and a chart.
- It’s a very unique pillow that looks really impressive when complete!

Crochet Christmas Tree Pillow Pattern Details
Skill Level
Intermediate
Size
The pattern creates a removable pillow cover that is approx. 16.5” x 16.5” and fits over a thick 16” x 16” pillow insert.*
Materials
Yarn: any size 4 (medium) yarn. I used Impeccable yarn by Loops & Threads. This yarn is 100% acrylic. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz / 127.5 g.
Approx. amount of yarn needed and colors:
- A) Main Color (Background): 530 yds. I used 2 skeins of Impeccable in “White.”
- B) Stump: 3 yds – I used “Chocolate.”
- C) Tree: 70 yds – I used “Deep Forest.”
- D) Yellow Lights & Star: 20 yds – I used “Sunny Day.”
- E) Red Lights: 15 yds – I used “Cherry.”
Crochet Hook Size: H/8 (5.00 mm)
Other Materials: yarn needle, pins, scissors, measuring tape and a thick 16” x 16” pillow insert.* Optional: 3 x 25mm buttons for the back, thread and sewing needle.
*The size of your pillow insert depends on how tightly you crochet and how stretchy your yarn is. I found I needed a thick 16” x 16” pillow insert (with a depth of 6”). Mine also fit over a 18” x 18” pillow insert.

Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- st = stitch
- sts = stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- tr = triple/treble crochet
- RS = right side (front)
- WS = wrong side (back)
- YO = yarn over
Gauge
4” x 4” = 14 sc and 18 rows.
Colorwork
For this pattern, you will add/pick up and use different colors when you are working on them, carry them along the WS/back when necessary and drop them when not in use (you don’t carry the unused colors to the ends of the rows). The rows are worked from right to left and then left to right so the color will be close by when you need it again.
Anytime you use the Lights Colors (D and E), you will need to carry the Tree Color (C) along the wrong side and catch C’s floats every 4-6 stitches. You don’t need to catch floats at any other time.
More info can be found here: Guide to Colorwork

Back/wrong side (WS) of the pillow
Preparing Your Yarn
For Piece A: Front Pillow Panel, you will need to use two skeins of the Main Color (A) at the same time. You can simply use two skeins or separate your yarn into two separate skeins/bobbins. Prior to starting, ensure:
- A (Main Color) Skein # 1: Has at least 140 yds of yarn.
- A (Main Color) Skein # 2: Has at least 60 yds of yarn.
You will use A Skein # 1 to start. You will attach A Skein # 2 on Row 9 (on the last st of C). You will use A Skein # 2 for any A (Main Color) sts on the left side of the Christmas tree throughout Rows 9 – 52 so you don’t need to carry A along the back of the tree.

Special Stitches
Bobble: A Bobble in this pattern is a double crochet 5 together (dc5tog) into the same stitch.
Here is how to do it: YO, insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook). YO, insert your hook into the same stitch, YO and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (3 loops on hook). YO, insert your hook into the same stitch, YO and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (4 loops on hook). YO, insert your hook into the same stitch, YO and pull up a loop (6 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (5 loops on hook). YO, insert your hook into the same stitch, YO and pull up a loop (7 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (6 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through all 6 loops on hook.
The next stitch after a bobble is always a sc. When making your sc in the next stitch, push the bobble stitch to the front (away from you) and crochet tightly as you make the next sc.
When working into a bobble stitch in the next row, you work into it normally – under the top two loops, just like any other stitch.
Triple/Treble Crochet Stitch (tr): YO twice, insert hook into next st. YO and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (3 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through last 2 loops on hook.

Pattern Notes
- Each row has 57 stitches.
- Ch 1 and turn after every row.
- Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- Always work in the first st (the st attached to ch).
- Stretch your pillow wide after each row.
- Ensure all strands are always kept on the wrong side.
- Add/switch color when you have two loops of the old color on the sc stitch BEFORE the new color stitch.
- Anytime you use the Lights Colors (D and E), you will need to carry the Tree Color (C) along the wrong side and catch it’s float every 4-6 stitches (learn how to catch/trap floats here). You don’t need to catch floats at any other time.
- Read the chart from right to left when working on right side rows and left to right when working on the wrong side. The chart is lightly shaded on wrong sides to help you remember. (The written instructions list everything in the correct order).

- B) Stump Color
- C) Tree Color
- D) Star and Yellow Lights Color
- E) Red Lights Color

Piece A: Front Pillow Panel
Start: With A (Main Color) Skein # 1, chain 58. Continue using A Skein # 1 until instructed to change colors.

- Using A (Main Color), sc for 25 sts, add B (Stump Color) yarn on the last (the 26th) st.

When the instructions say “[D x 5, Bobble] x 4.” What this means is: *with D, sc in the next 5 sts. With D, in the next st, make a Bobble.* Repeat from * to * a total of 4 times. Then proceed to the next set of instructions.

The front pillow panel should measure (after stretching slightly) 16.5” w and 16” h. (Without stretching the height is approx. 15”). Note: the Bobbles and tr sts make the rows of sc higher on the front panel. When working on the back panels, the height of rows will be slightly shorter.

Start: With D, make a Magic Circle.
Round 1: Make a sl st into the Magic Circle. [Dc into Magic Circle. Ch 2. Sl st in the second ch from hook. Dc into Magic Circle. Sl st into Magic Circle.] x 5 (repeat instructions brackets a total of 5 times). Sl st into first sl st made to join. Pull Magic Circle tight.

Rows 3 – 16: Repeat Row 2 (for Piece B).
Row 17 (RS): Ch 2. Dc in the 1st st (the st attached to the ch). Dc in each st across. (57 sts).
After Row 17, Piece C should measure (after stretching slightly) approx. 16.5” w x 5” h.
Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.
Pillow Assembly
Place Piece A (the front) face down with the star at the top and the WS facing up.
Place Piece B (the bottom of the back) on top of A, with the RS facing up, with the last row you completed on the bottom, in line with the bottom of A. The chain row of B near the top of A.
Place C (the top of the back), with the RS facing up, on top of B. Piece C will slightly overlap Piece B.

Pin the three pieces in place. Flip the pinned pieces over so the Christmas tree is now facing up/you.
With the main color, attach yarn to bottom left corner. Sc into each st along the bottom. Sc into the corner st three times. Repeat around pillow cover: sc along each side and 3 sc in each corner, single crocheting the pieces together. At the final corner, single crochet twice into the final corner stitch. Fasten off and weave in ends.

While not pictured here, you could sew on buttons to the top of Piece B and have them go through the dc sts made on Piece C. It would make it more secure and look lovely!

Place your pillow insert inside the pillow cover. Now you have a new Christmas tree pillow!
