Crochet Market Bag
If you are looking for a crochet market bag, grab 400 yds of any size 4 (medium) yarn and an H/8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook and follow the step-by-step instructions for this easy market bag crochet pattern!

The stitch used in this Crochet Market Bag Pattern is the same stitch that I’ve used in my Classic Baby Blanket and my Summer Headband patterns. It’s become one of my favorite stitches.
I call this stitch the Modified Blanket Stitch because it’s the reverse of the blanket stitch. It’s so easy to do and works up really quickly.

Crochet Market Bag Pattern
I’ve been using my Tote Bag all the time.
However, there are times when you need a lighter bag – like when you’re going to the market.
One of the reasons I love this Crochet Market Bag Pattern is because of the built-in handles. There’s no sewing involved!

I chose to make this bag using Pound of Love yarn, which is 100% premium acrylic. The handles do stretch a little. I personally don’t mind but if you don’t want your handles to stretch as much, I recommend using cotton yarn instead of acrylic.

Market Bag Crochet Pattern Details
Skill Level
Easy
Size
The pattern creates a bag that is approx. 13.5” high, 13.5” wide and 3” deep with straps that are 12.5” away from the bag.

Materials
Yarn: You can use any size 4 (medium) yarn. Cotton yarn will stretch the least. You will need approx. 400 yds in total.
I used Pound of Love by Lion Brand in “Oxford Gray.” This yarn is medium (4) and 100% premium acrylic. A skein is 1020 yds / 932 m and 454 g / 16 oz. I used less than half of a skein.
Crochet Hook Size: H/8 (5.00 mm)
Other Materials: Stitch markers, yarn needle, scissors and measuring tape.
Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- st = stitch
- sts = stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
- sk = skip
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- ch-2 sp = chain 2 space
Gauge
4” x 4” = 12 sts and 8 rounds following the bag body pattern (count sc and dc sts only, not chains).

Pattern Notes
- This market bag is made from the bottom up, in the round. Never turn at the end of a round.
- Chains never count as stitches.
- Always work into the 1st st, the st attached to the chain – unless instructed to skip it.
- Always put a stitch marker in the top of the first sc of every round to help ensure you start and end in the right place and you have the correct number of sts.
- If the instructions say “2 sc in next 3 sts,” what this means is make 2 sc in next st (if it’s the first st of the round, work into the 1st st), then 2 sc in the next st and 2 sc in the next st.
- If the instructions say “[2 sc in next st. 1 sc in next st] x 2,” what this means is to complete the steps in brackets a total of two times (i.e. 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st).
