Crochet Paw Print Blanket Pattern

This free Crochet Paw Print Blanket Pattern creates a large throw that is incredibly soft, warm and snuggly. You’ll love cuddling up under this delightful blanket, which makes a beautiful addition to your home decor.

Crochet Paw Print Blanket Pattern

I used size 6 blanket yarn (Chenille Home Slim by Loops and Threads) which was so nice to work with. The smooth and silky fleece yarn runs through your hands so softly and works up really quickly.

The pattern creates a blanket that is approx. 52” wide x 81” high (without the tassels). It’s quite tall to ensure lots of extra warmth around your feet and can be pulled right up to over your shoulders on a cold winter night. You can make it shorter by stopping the pattern 4 rows after the 2nd last paw print.

This crochet paw print blanket makes the ultimate gift for any pet owner, animal lover or for yourself!

Crochet Paw Print Blanket Pattern

Materials

Yarn: I used Chenille Home Slim by Loops and Threads in the colors “Ash” (for the background) and “Cream” (for the paw prints). This yarn is size 6 (super bulky). A skein is 218 yds / 200 m and 250 g / 8.8 oz. I used 11 skeins of Ash (10 and 1/4 exactly) and 1 skein of Cream. You can substitute with your favorite size 6 (super bulky) yarn. You will need approx. 2,234 yds for the background and approx. 218 yds for the paw prints.

Crochet Hook: Size K/10 1/2 (6.50 mm)

Other Materials: yarn needle and scissors. Optional: a piece of cardboard or any object that is 5” wide (to help cut tassels).

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sts = stitches
  • sc = single crochet
  • RS = Right Side (the front)
  • WS = Wrong Side (the back)
  • A = Main/Background Color
  • B = Contrast Color (Color used for the Paw Prints)

Working with Two Colors

For this pattern, you will add/pick up and use the contrast color (B) only when working on the paw prints and carry the main color (A) along the back until you are ready to use it again.

Once finished with the contrast color for the row, you will drop it (you don’t carry it to the end of the row). The rows are worked from right to left and then left to right so the contrast color will be right there when you need it again on the next row.

There are many times throughout the pattern where you need to carry the contrast color along the wrong side (WS) to ensure it’s in the correct place for the next row. These times are indicated in the written instructions and on the chart.

Ensure all strands are always kept along the wrong side.

Right and wrong sides

Here is more information on how to crochet with two colors including a video tutorial. If you read/watched this, I speak a lot about catching floats. For this pattern, you will carrying your yarn on every stitch so there is no need to catch floats.

Preparing Your Yarn

There are three times during the pattern that you will be working on two paw prints at once and will need two different balls of yarn.

If you only have one skein of your contrast color, create a bobbin so that you can use your main skein and the bobbin at the same time. Each paw print requires approx. 25 yds / 23 g of yarn.  Prepare three bobbins with this amount of yarn in each in advance of starting the pattern.

Pattern Notes

  • Each row has 126 stitches.
  • Ch 1 and turn after every row.
  • Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Always work in the 1st st (the st attached to ch).
  • Ensure all strands are always kept on the wrong side of the work.
  • Add/switch color when you have two loops of the old color on the sc stitch BEFORE the new color stitch.
  • Read the chart from right to left when working on right side rows and left to right when working on the wrong side. The chart is lightly shaded on wrong sides to help you remember. (The written instructions list everything in the correct order)

Paw Print Blanket Written Instructions

(Pattern charts are below)

Start: Chain 127

Row 1 (RS): Sc in each ch across. Reminders: each row has 126 sts. Ch 1 and turn after each row.

Rows 2 – 4: Sc in each st across.

After Row 4, work should measure approx. 55” wide x 2” high.

Note About Colorwork Instructions:

In the next row, you will begin changing colors. Every stitch is a single crochet (sc). The pattern does not say to sc because it gets too jumbled. Instead it says something like: A x 28, B x 3, A x 95 (carry B x 1) which means: using A (Main Color), sc for 27 sts, add B (Contrast/Paw Print Color) yarn on the last (the 28th) st. Using B, sc for 2 sts, on the last (the 3rd) st, change back to A. “A x 95 (carry B x 1)” means that for the 1st of your next 95 sts with A, you need to carry B along the back. Then you can drop B and just crochet with A for the next 94 sts.

Row 5 (RS): A x 28, B x 3, A x 95 (carry B x 1).

Row 6 (WS): A x 94, B x 5, A x 27.

Row 7 (RS): A x 27, B x 5, A x 94 (carry B x 8).

Crochet Paw Print Blanket Pattern

Row 11 (RS): A x 20, B x 13, A x 3 (carry B x 3), B x 5, A x 85.

Row 12 (WS): A x 86 (carry B on the last st), B x 3, A x 4 (carry B x 4), B x 13, A x 20.

Carry B on the last st means that you will crochet with just A for 85 sts. On the 86th st, carry B along the back.

Row 13 (RS): A x 20, B x12, A x 94.

Row 14 (WS): A x 94, B x 11, A x 21.

Pattern Chart (Close Up)

Here is a close up of the print prints (it’s exactly the same as the full chart, except for the row and column numbers, which don’t coincide with the pattern). Each paw print in the pattern is exactly the same.

Tassels

You will attach tassels to the chain row and last row (with the RS facing up). Attach one tassel on the 1st st and one at the last st. The rest approx. every other chain or stitch, spaced evenly apart.

You will need approx.126 strands (63 for the bottom and 63 for the top). Note: You may find you need less or more depending on how they are spaced. Just ensure even spacing between.

Preparing Your Yarn

Each tassel has 1 strand of yarn that is approx. 10” long.

Tip for cutting the the strands: find an object that is 5” wide (a piece of cardboard, a notebook, etc). Wrap your yarn around the 5” object 63 times. Cut the yarn in the middle to form individual strands. These 10” strands will be used as the tassels. Repeat to make a total of 126.

For different sized tassels, cut smaller or larger strands.

Cutting tassels

Attaching the Tassels

A) Take one strand of yarn, fold it in half. With your hook, pull the folded ends through the stitch from the front to the back (which creates a loop).

B) Pull the ends through the loop.

C) Pull tight to make a knot. (The front of the knot should be on the front/RS).

Tassels

Trim the strands to make them all one length. I cut mine to be approx. 4”.

After trimming the ends, I found that there were a lot of fuzzies from the ends of the stands of yarn. To stop the ends from fraying / fuzzing tie a knot at the ends.
