Size

You can make the blanket any size you would like by repeating the pattern until you reach your desired size.

The pattern includes instructions for a Small “Blankie”: 24” and a Regular Blanket: 44” (measured tip to tip).

Gauge

Make a flat swatch (not in the round) following this pattern for each row: Ch 1. *Sc in the next st. Dc in the next st.* Repeat from * to * across. Turn.

Gauge using size 3 yarn: 4” x 4” = 12 sts and 11 rows.

Gauge using size 4 yarn: 4” x 4” = 13 sts and 12 rows.

Materials

Yarn: You can use either size 3 (light) yarn or size 4 (medium) yarn. The amount of yarn required depends on the size of your blanket and the number of colors you are using. Examples provided below.

Crochet Hook: If you are using size 3 yarn, I recommend a H/8 (5.00 mm) hook. If you are using size 4 yarn, I recommend an I/9 (5.50 mm) hook.

Other Materials: yarn needle, scissors and a stitch marker. Optional: rust-proof pins, a spray bottle and blocking boards for blocking the finished blanket.

Terminology

The pattern is written in English for right-handed crochet using US terminology. If you are more familiar with UK terminology, check out my US to UK Conversion Chart.

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sts = stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet

Yarn for this Star Blanket

Size 3 (Light) Yarn

Crochet Star Pattern Blanket

The image above is a 44” Regular Size Blanket that was made with size 3 (light) yarn.

I used Snuggly Wuggly by Loops & Threads. This yarn is size 3 (light) weight and 100% acrylic. A skein is 446 yds / 408 m and 5 oz / 141 g.

Amount of yarn required for a 44” blanket: approx. 1,005 yds in total. I used one skein of each color. Note that if you are making your blanket bigger, you will require more yarn.

Colors I used and the amount of yarn used of each:

  • Pink (“Fairy Tail”): 35 yds
  • Orange (“Cotton Candy”): 85 yds
  • Yellow (“Yellow”): 105 yds
  • Green (“Light Green”): 140 yds
  • Blue (“Pale Blue”): 185 yds
  • Purple (“Soft Lilac”): 245 yds
  • White (“White): 310 yds

Star Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern

The image above is a 24” Small “Blankie” Size Blanket that was made with size 4 (medium) yarn.

I used Impeccable, Solid by Loops & Threads. This yarn is size 4 (medium) weight and 100% acrylic. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz / 127.5 g.

Amount of yarn required for a 2 ft blanket: approx. 450 yds in total. I used one skein of each color. Note that if you are making your blanket bigger, you will require more yarn.

Colors I used and amount of yarn used of each:

  • Red (“Cherry”): 50 yds
  • Orange (“Orange Crush”): 60 yds
  • Yellow (“Sunny Day”): 70 yds
  • Green (“Forest”): 80 yds
  • Blue (“Blue Moon”): 90 yds
  • Purple (“Lavender”): 100 yds

Changing Colors

The pattern does not include directions for when to change colors because there are so many possibilities. You can make the blanket in one solid color or use any number of colors.

I’ve included two examples of when to change colors but the possibilities are truly endless and I would love to see what you come up with!

Change colors after finishing a round by placing the new color on your hook and pulling the new color through the loop of your current color. With your new color, begin the next round. Fasten off the old color.

Pattern Notes (All Sizes)

  • The pattern is worked in the round. Do not turn after any round.
  • Chains never count as stitches.
  • Always work into the 1st st unless instructed to skip it.
  • Always join by making a slip stitch into the top of the 1st st made in the round, not into the chain.
  • Tip: place a stitch marker in the top of the 1st st made in each round to help ensure you start and end in the right spot.
  • If the instructions say “Sc, dc, sc” what this means is: sc in the next st, dc in the next st, sc in the next st.
