Turkey Crochet Coaster

  • Each turkey crochet coaster works up quickly and they use only a small amount of yarn (great for scrap-busting!)
  • The finished size is approx 5.5″ x 5.5″, which is perfect for any type of Thanksgiving cocktail you might be serving!
  • The pattern includes step by step written instructions as well as a chart so you can easily follow along.

I chose to use green for the main color / background but one of my amazing testers, Nadine Frankham, made a set of them in all different colors and I think they look absolutely amazing!

Crochet Turkey Coaster Pattern Details

Skill Level

Easy (colorwork and simple stitches)

Size

Each coaster is approx 5.5” x 5.5”

Gauge

4″ x 4″ = 15 sc and 17 rows

Materials

Yarn: Any worsted weight / medium (size 4) acrylic or cotton yarn. I used Impeccable by Loops and Threads, Solid. The size is 4.5 oz / 127.5 g. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m.

Exact colors I used & amount of yarn required for each (approx.):

  • Brown (“Soft Taupe”): 10 yds
  • Green (“Fern”): 20 yds
  • Red (“Cherry”): 4 yds
  • Orange (“Pumpkin”): 4 yds
  • Yellow (“Sunny Day”): 4 yds
  • Black (“Black”): 2 ft

Crochet Hook Size: F/5 (3.75mm) or size needed to obtain gauge.

Supplies for Back of Coaster (Optional): Felt for the back of each coaster (a 5.5″ x 5.5″ square piece for each coaster) and glue (I used Fabric Fusion glue by Aleene’s).

How to Crochet With Two Colors

How to Crochet with Two Colors

New to colorwork? Read my step-by-step guide: How to Crochet with Two Colors. You’ll be a pro in colorwork in no time!

Turkey Coaster Pattern Notes:

  • Each row has 19 stitches.
  • Ch 1 and turn after every row.
  • Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Always work in the 1st st (the st attached to ch).
  • You don’t need to worry about catching floats for this pattern. Just leave unused color hanging.
  • Stretch your coaster wide after each row.
  • Ensure all strands are always kept on the wrong side of the work.
  • Add/switch color when you have two loops of the old color on the sc stitch BEFORE the new color stitch.

Important Note About Instructions

Every stitch is a single crochet (sc). The pattern does not say to sc because it gets too jumbled. Instead it says something like: GREEN x 4, BROWN x 9, GREEN x 5, what this means is: using green, sc for 3 sts, add brown on the last (the 4th) st. Using brown, sc for 8 sts, on the last (the 9th) st, change back to green. With green, sc for 5 sts.

Turkey Coasters Instructions

Preparing Your Yarn

Before beginning the pattern, cut strands of yarn for each color as indicated below. This way you don’t need to carry colors across or catch/trap floats. The instructions will state when you should attach your strands.

  • Green – cut a 5 yd strand. You will also use your main skein.
  • Brown – don’t cut a strand, just use your main skein
  • Red – cut 2 strands of 2 yds each
  • Orange – cut 2 strands of 2 yds each
  • Yellow – cut 2 strands of 2 yds each (you will also use this color for the beak)
  • Black – cut a strand of 2 feet.

(Pattern chart is below)

Coaster Instructions

If you crochet tightly, you may want to go up a hook size for the starting chains (only) to ensure you can work more easily into the back ridge loop on Row 1.

Foundation Row: With your main skein of green, chain 20.

For Row 1 (only) work into the back ridge loops.

Where to crochet in the chain

Row 1 (RS): Still using green, in the 2nd ch from hook, sc (1 st made). GREEN x 4 (5 sts made), (attach main skein of brown) BROWN x 9 (14 sts made), (attach strand of green [5 yds]) GREEN x 5 (19 sts made). Reminders: each row has 19 sts. Ch 1 and turn after each row.

(Work in both loops from now on.)

Row 2 (WS): GREEN x 4, BROWN x 11, GREEN x 4.

Row 3 (RS): GREEN x 3, BROWN x 13, GREEN x 3.

Row 4 (WS): Repeat Row 3.

Row 5 (RS): GREEN x 2, (attach 1st strand of red [2 yds] ) RED x 1, BROWN x 13, (attach 2nd strand of red [2 yds]) RED x 1, GREEN x 2.

Row 6 (WS): GREEN x 1, RED x 2, BROWN x 13, RED x 2, GREEN x 1.

Row 7 (RS): GREEN x 1, RED x 2, (attach 1st strand of orange [2 yds]) ORANGE x 1, BROWN x 11, (attach 2nd strand of orange [2 yds]) ORANGE x 1, RED x 2, GREEN x 1.

Row 19 (RS): GREEN x 7, BROWN x 5, GREEN x 7.

Row 20 (WS): GREEN x 8, BROWN x 3, GREEN x 8.

Fasten off brown and the 5 yd strand of green, leaving a 10” tail for both. Leave main skein of green attached and begin the border.

Coaster Border

Still with main skein of green, ch 1 and turn (RS of coaster will now be facing you). Sc in each st across the top. Make 3 sc in the corner st. Sc evenly down the side. Make 3 sc in the corner st. Sc in each st across the bottom. Make 3 sc in the corner st. Sc evenly up the side. Do not make 3 in last corner st. Sl st into 1st sc made to join.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Optional: while you are weaving in your ends, you can use the tails to sew over any color gaps created by the stitches. I found that the beak and some of the feathers needed a little bit of finishing.  Using your yarn needle and the tail, go over the stitches that need to be filled in. Try to replicate the natural direction of the stitches.

Weave in all loose ends.

Blocking (Optional)

After completing the entire pattern, I would recommend blocking these coasters by pinning them down (with rust proof pins), spraying with water and leaving them to dry. Do not iron! Blocking helps the corners of the coasters not curl up, ensures the coaster lies flat and holds the square shape.

Felt Backs (Optional)

I attached felt backs to the coasters to make them have a smooth bottom and hide the carried yarn.

I attached the felt to the back of the coasters with Aleene’s Fabric Fusion glue and followed these steps:

  • Measure your coaster and cut your felt to be approx. 0.5” away from edge.
  • Round out the corners (for a nicer look)
  • Put the fabric glue all around (approximately .75” away from edge).
  • Flatten the glue to ensure there isn’t a big bump when it dries (I used a piece of cardboard to spread it)
  • Lay your felt square onto the back and press down. Leave to dry completely.
