Pattern Details

Size
This pattern, when made with either size 3 (light) or size 4 (medium) yarn, creates a shawl that is approx. 66” wide and 25” high. (The average size of a rectangle shawl is 60”- 70” wide and 25”- 30” high).

Materials
Yarn: You can use any size 3 (light) yarn or any size 4 (medium) yarn.
Size 3 (light) yarn will make the shawl lighter and breezier. Size 4 (medium) yarn will make the shawl thicker and warmer.
When making this shawl with size 3 (light) yarn, you will need approx. 1,615 yds in total. I used Bernat Baby Sport in “White.” This yarn is size 3 (light) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 1,256 yds / 1,148 m and 12.3 oz / 350 g. I used 2 skeins of Bernat Baby Sport.
When making this shawl with size 4 (medium) yarn, you will need approx. 1,430 yds in total. I used Soft Classic Solid by Loops & Threads in “Sage.” This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 354 yds / 324 m and 7 oz / 198 g. I used 5 skeins of Soft Classic Solid.
Crochet Hook Sizes:
- For size 3 (light) yarn: I/9 (5.50 mm) and H/8 (5.00 mm).
- For size 4 (medium) yarn: J/10 (6.00 mm) and I/9 (5.50 mm).
Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.

Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- approx. = approximately
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- dc = double crochet
- RS = right side
- sc = single crochet
- sk = skip
- sl st = slip stitch
- sp/sps = space/spaces
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- WS = wrong side
Gauge
Exact sizing is not important. For reference, following the Shawl Body pattern and counting only sc and dc sts (not chs), 4” x 4” =
- Using size 3 (light) yarn: 11 sts and 11 rows.
- Using size 4 (medium) yarn: 10 sts and 10 rows.
Because exact sizing is not important, feel free to adjust your hook size based on your personal preference.

How to Adjust the Size
The number of starting chains determines the width and the number of rows determines the height. To adjust the width, make more or less starting chains in multiples of 3 + 2 (meaning to take any number that you can divide by 3 and then add 2 to that number – i.e. 30 + 2 = 32 starting chains required). To adjust the height, make more or less rows. End the Shawl Body after completing a wrong side (WS) row.
Pattern Notes
- Chains never count as stitches.
- On right side (RS) rows, the front of your work is facing you and the starting tail is on the left. On wrong side (WS) rows, the back of your work is facing you and the starting tail is on the right.
- The width of your work can fluctuate at the start. If after several rows you are not happy with the width, start again with a different number of starting chains (see “How to Adjust the Size”).
- The stitch used in the Shawl Body is commonly referred to as the Wattle Stitch.

Pattern Instructions
Shawl Body
Use the following hook sizes for the entire Shawl Body:
- For size 3 (light) yarn: use an I/9 (5.50 mm) hook.
- For size 4 (medium) yarn: use a J/10 (6.00 mm) hook.
Start:
If using size 3 (light) yarn: ch 263.
If using size 4 (medium) yarn: ch 242.
Do not weave in the starting tail until you have completed the entire pattern.
The rest of the Shawl Body instructions are the same for both size 3 and size 4 yarn. The only difference is the number of sts and ch-1 sps in a row (the stitch count for each is provided at the end of the row’s instructions).
For Row 1 (only) work into the back ridge loops. This creates a neater bottom edge.

Row 1 (RS): In the second ch from the hook, (sc, ch 1, dc).
*Sk the next 2 chs.
In the next ch, (sc, ch 1, dc). *
Repeat from * to * across.
Stitch count:
- Size 3 yarn: (sc, ch 1, dc) x 88.
- Size 4 yarn: (sc, ch 1, dc) x 81.
Reminder: chs never count as sts.
You may notice slight gaps along the bottom of your work. These will become less noticeable as your shawl grows and will be covered when you complete the final row along the bottom.
Each (sc, ch 1, dc) creates a ch-1 sp that you will work into on the following row.
When working into a ch-1 sp, work into the sp under the ch-1 and between the dc and sc sts from the previous row.
Note: The starting ch-1 does not create a ch-1 sp.
Row 2 (WS): Ch 1 and turn.
Only work into ch-1 sps, not into the tops of sts.
In the first ch-1 sp, (sc, ch 1, dc).
*In the next ch-1 sp, (sc, ch 1, dc).*
Repeat from * to * across.
Stitch count:
- Size 3 yarn: (sc, ch 1, dc) x 88.
- Size 4 yarn: (sc, ch 1, dc) x 81.

Row 3 and on: Repeat Row 2 until the height of your work is approx. 24” high or until you reach your desired height. End after completing a WS row. Reminder: On a WS row, the starting tail will be on your right.
Using size 3 (light) yarn, my completed Shawl Body had 68 rows.
Using size 4 (medium) yarn, my completed Shawl Body had 60 rows.
Do not fasten off. Proceed to the Final Rows.

Final Rows
Use the following hook sizes for both final rows:
- For size 3 (light) yarn: use an H/8 (5.00 mm) hook.
- For size 4 (medium) yarn: use an I/9 (5.50 mm) hook.
If you find your work is ruffling, try going down an additional hook size or several hook sizes if needed.
The instructions are the same for both size 3 and size 4 yarn. The only difference is the stitch count.
Final Row – Top (RS): Ch 1 and turn.
For this row, work into each ch-1 sp and into the top of each sc st. Do not work into the tops of any other sts.
In the first ch-1 sp, (sc, ch 2, dc).
In the top of the next sc st, sl st.
*In the next ch-1 sp, (sc, ch 2, dc).
In the top of the next sc st, sl st.*
Repeat from * to * across.
Stitch count:
- Size 3 yarn: (sc, ch 2, dc) x 88 and 88 sl sts.
- Size 4 yarn: (sc, ch 2, dc) x 81 and 81 sl sts.
Fasten off. Fasten off always means to cut the yarn that’s attached to your skein and pull it through the loop that was on your hook.

Final Row – Bottom (RS):
Reminder: there’s a step-by-step video tutorial if you need any help.
Position your work so the bottom row (with the starting chs) is at the top with the starting tail on the top right.
For this row, work under 2 loops of a ch when making (sc, ch 2, dc) and under 1 loop of a ch (the top loop) when making a sl st.
Insert your hook into the first ch. Place yarn on your hook and pull it through the ch.
Ch 1. In the first ch, (sc, ch 2, dc).
Sk the next ch.
In the next ch, sl st.
*In the next ch, (sc, ch 2, dc).
Sk the next ch.
In the next ch, sl st.*
Repeat from * to * across until there is 1 ch left.
In the last ch, sl st.
Stitch count:
- Size 3 yarn: (sc, ch 2, dc) x 87 and 88 sl sts.
- Size 4 yarn: (sc, ch 2, dc) x 80 and 81 sl sts.
Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

And now you have a new shawl!
