Hearts Puff Stitch Crochet Blanket

Crochet Puff Stitch

This crochet baby blanket includes a beautiful repeating hearts pattern. The hearts are made with puff stitches (sometimes called bobbles).

If you haven’t done a puff stitch or bobble before, you may be thinking – is it too difficult? Puff stitches are actually really easy! They are essentially just making double crochet stitches over and over again in the same stitch. This pattern includes step by step instructions on how to crochet a puff stitch plus there’s a video tutorial to show you how. And there’s a chart to help you follow along with the pattern visually.

A Practical & Modern Crochet Baby Blanket

The stitches in between the puff stitches are single crochet and double crochet, which creates a stunning modern, textured look that is super easy to make. Like all of my crochet baby blankets, this pattern is made with a baby in mind – there are no huge holes for baby’s fingers to get caught in and yet it is still lightweight and breathable. The border is made of alternating between single crochet and triple (also known as treble) crochet, which I think really compliments the hearts and completes the look.

The puff stitches appear on the front of the blanket and the back is the body pattern (which I think looks great on its own). You can adjust the height of the blanket make it shorter or taller.

Crochet Baby Blanket Using Size 3 Yarn

If you have searched for “crochet baby blanket patterns” using size 3 yarn, you have come to the right place! You can use any brand of size 3 yarn to make this Hearts Puff Stitch Baby Blanket. Size 3 is also referred to as DK or Light Worsted.

I used Snuggly Wuggly by Loops and Threads, which I really loved. It’s super soft and easy to work with, plus it’s washable and dryable, an absolute must for a crochet baby blanket! But you can use any brand of size 3 yarn to make this blanket.

4” x 4” = 14 sts and 13 rows (following the blanket body pattern without the Puff Stitches)

Materials

Yarn: Approx 1670 yds / 1530 m of Light/DK (Size 3) yarn. I used Snuggly Wuggly by Loops & Threads in the color: Soft Lilac. A skein of this yarn is 5 oz / 141 g and 446 yds / 408 m. I used 3.75 skeins.

You can use any brand of yarn you’d like as long as it’s size 3 Light/DK yarn.

Crochet Hook Size: H/8 (5.00 mm) – you may want to go up a hook size for the starting chains (only) and/or use a different hook size to obtain gauge (which is not mandatory).

Other Materials: scissors, yarn needle.

The pattern is written in English for right-handed crochet using US terminology. If you are more familiar with UK terminology, check out my US to UK Conversion Chart.

Baby Blanket Pattern Notes

  • The pattern is worked from the bottom up.
  • All Rows have 110 sts.
  • Ch 1 never counts as a stitch.
  • Ch 1 and turn at the end of each row.
  • Always work into the 1st stitch of the row (the stitch attached to the chain) unless instructed not to.
  • When the instructions say something like: “Repeat *SC, DC* across the next 10 sts,” what this means is: SC in the next st. DC in the next st. Continue repeating SC in the next st, DC in the next st until a total of 10 sts are made (5 SC and 5 DC).
  • When the instructions say something like: “[SC, DC, SC, Puff Stitch] x 3,” what this means is: repeat these instructions a total of 3 times, which in this case would be: SC, DC, SC, Puff Stitch, SC, DC, SC, Puff Stitch, SC, DC, SC, Puff Stitch.
  • There is a front and a back side of the blanket. The front is where the Puff Stitches are shown. The back is just the blanket body pattern.
  • The Puff Stitches are always made when the front of the blanket is facing away from you.
  • When working into a Puff Stitch from the previous row, always SC into the top of the Puff Stitch.

Special Stitches

Puff Stitch

The Puff Stitch is a dc5tog into the same stitch.

Here is how to do a Puff Stitch: YO, insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook). YO, insert your hook into the same stitch, YO and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (3 loops on hook). YO, insert your hook into the same stitch, YO and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (4 loops on hook). YO, insert your hook into the same stitch, YO and pull up a loop (6 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (5 loops on hook). YO, insert your hook into the same stitch, YO and pull up a loop (7 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (6 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through all 6 loops on hook.

The next stitch after a Puff Stitch is always a SC. When making your SC in the next stitch, push the Puff Stitch to the front (away from you) and crochet tightly as you make the next SC.

Triple (Treble) Crochet Stitch (TR):

Here is how to do a TR: YO twice, insert hook into next st. YO and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (3 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through last 2 loops on hook.

After reaching your desired height, do not turn and do not fasten off. Proceed to border instructions.
