Easy Baby Blanket Free Pattern - Moss Stitch Crochet

About This Moss Stitch Crochet Blanket Free Pattern

  • This is a very easy pattern that works up really quickly and looks beautiful when complete.
  • This crochet Moss Stitch Baby Blanket is perfect for any gender.
  • The pattern includes step by step instructions on how to crochet the moss stitch and blanket as well as a video tutorial.
  • This pattern is made with a baby in mind – there are no huge holes for baby’s fingers to get caught in and yet it is still lightweight and breathable.
  • The pattern is completely customizable so you can easily adjust the width and height of the blanket.
  • The border is made of alternating between single crochet and triple (also known as treble) crochet, for a stunning, textured look.

Pound of Love Baby Blanket Pattern

For this pattern, I used Pound of Love by Lion Thread. I had never used it before and absolutely fell in love with it! It’s buttery soft and really easy to use. It was wonderful getting one skein of this premium yarn in the economical size, which saved my multiple trips back to the yarn store! The skein weight is 16 oz / 448 g and a skein has 1020 yds / 932 m. Even after completing the whole blanket I still had yarn left.

If you are looking for a baby blanket pattern to use with Pound of Love yarn, this Moss Stitch Crochet Baby Blanket pattern is perfect. It’s even machine washable and dryable, a must for a baby blanket!

Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern – Worsted Weight Yarn

While I highly recommend Pound of Love, you can use any brand of worsted weight yarn for this pattern. Just ensure you are choosing a size 4 (medium), worsted weight yarn. There are significant variations to the thickness of worsted weight yarns but this blanket pattern offers a lot of flexibility, making it a fantastic crochet baby blanket pattern for worsted weight yarn.

How to Adjust the Size

The Crochet Moss Stitch Blanket Pattern is made from the chain row up. To make the width of the blanket bigger or smaller, adjust the number of starting chains in multiples of 2+1 (meaning that your number of starting chains should be an odd number). To make the height of the blanket bigger or smaller, make more or fewer rows.

For Row 1 (only), work into the back ridge loops.

Where to crochet in the chain

Row 1: In the 2nd ch from hook, SC into the back ridge loop (see pic above). In the next ch, SC into the back ridge loop. Continue to SC into the back ridge loop of every ch. (100 SC made).

(Work in both loops from now on)

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn. Sk the 1st st (the st attached to the ch). In the next st, SC (gap space created). *Ch 1. Sk the next st. In the next st, SC (gap space created).* Repeat from * to * across row. (Your final st is a SC into the last st of the row). (50 SC made. 50 gap spaces created).

Row 3: Ch 1 and turn. In the 1st gap space from the previous row, SC (gap space created). Ch 1. *In the next gap space from the previous row, SC (gap space created). Ch 1.* Repeat from * to * across row until last gap space. SC in the last gap space (which is the space between the last SC and the turning chain from the previous row) (gap space created). (50 SC made. 50 gap spaces created).

Row 4 and on: Repeat Row 3 until your rows measure approx. 26” or 66 cm (approximately 94 rows in total) or your desired height. All rows will have the same number of stitches/gap spaces. Do not fasten off.

After completing the border, you may want to block your finished blanket to help shape it properly. Blocking helps you achieve flat corners and straight edges and helps fix uneven stitches.  Here’s more info on how to block your work.
