Pattern Details

Skill Level

The skill level is easy (colorwork and simple stitches). If you are new to colorwork, I recommend reading my guide on How to Crochet with Two (or More) Colors.

Size

This pattern creates a removable pillow cover that is approximately 17” x 17” and fits over an 18” x 18” pillow insert.*

Materials

Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) yarn. I used Impeccable yarn by Loops & Threads. This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz / 127.5 g.

Amount of yarn required (approximately) and the colors I used:

Color A = Background: 450 yds (2 skeins of Impeccable) – “Heather” (beige).
Color B = Pumpkin: 90 yds – “Pumpkin” (orange).
Color C = Stem: 10 yds – “Walnut” (brown).
Leaves: 10 yds – “Forest” (green).

Crochet Hook Size: H/8 (5.00 mm).

Other Materials: Yarn needle, pins, scissors, an 18” x 18” pillow insert* and a measuring tape. Optional: stitch markers, 3 x 25 mm buttons, thread and sewing needle.

*If you crochet tightly and/or find your pillow cover is smaller, you could use a 16” x 16” pillow insert.

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.

Abbreviations

ch/chs = chain/chains
dc = double crochet
RS = right side
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
st/sts = stitch/stitches
WS = wrong side

Gauge

4” x 4” = 13 sc and 17 rows

Crocheting with Multiple Colors

In this pattern, when instructed to use color B (the Pumpkin color), you will carry color A (the Background color) along the wrong side (the back) until instructed to use it again.

To ensure the strand of A doesn’t get too long as you carry it along the wrong side, catch/trap it every 4-6 stitches (this is called “catching A’s float”).

When instructed to use A again, you will drop B where it is – you don’t carry it to the end of the row. The rows are worked from right to left and then left to right so it will be in the correct place when you need it again on the following row. Later in the pattern, you will do the same with color C (the Stem color).

Ensure that all strands are always kept on the wrong side.

Pattern Notes

Each row has 56 stitches.
Ch 1 and turn at the start of every row.
Chains never count as stitches.
Always work in the first stitch (the stitch attached to the chain).
Stretch your work wide after each row.
When crocheting with multiple colors:
- Always add/switch colors before completing the last stitch of the old color when you have two loops on your hook. Place the new color on your hook and pull it through the two loops of the old color.
- Catch the unused color’s float every 4-6 stitches.
- Ensure all strands are always kept on the wrong side.

Detailed Instructions

Below these detailed instructions, there is a table called “Summary Instructions” that includes the same directions as these detailed instructions but in an easy-to-reference format. There’s also a Pattern Chart below the Summary Instructions.

Start: With A (the Background color), ch 57. Continue using A until instructed to use B (on Row 9).

Row 1 (RS): In the second ch from the hook, sc.

Sc in each ch across.

(Reminders: all rows have 56 sc sts. Always ch 1 and turn at the start of each row. Always work in the first st).

Row 2 (WS): Sc in each st across.

Rows 3 – 8: Repeat Row 2.

After Row 8, work should measure 17” wide and should continue to measure 17” wide for the rest of the panel.

Row 9 (RS): With A, sc in the first 24 sts.

With B (the Pumpkin color), sc in the next 7 sts.

With A, sc in the last 25 sts.

Here’s how to complete Row 9 step by step:

With A, ch 1 and turn. The RS/front is now facing you.
With A, sc in the first 23 sts (the first st & next 22 sts).
With A, insert your hook into the next st (the 24th st in the row). Yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on your hook). Place color B on your hook and pull it through the two loops of A currently on your hook. Leave A hanging where it is.
With B, sc in the next 6 sts – after making 4 or 5 sts (out of those 6), catch A’s float along the WS/back.
With B, insert your hook into the next st (the 31st st in the row). Yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on your hook). Place A on your hook and pull it through the two loops of B currently on your hook.
Leave B hanging where it is (you will pick it up again on the next row).
With A, sc in the last 25 sts (sc in each st until the end of the row).

Row 10 (WS): With A, sc in the first 19 sts.

With B, sc in the next 18 sts.

With A, sc in the last 19 sts.

Row 11 (RS): With A, sc in the first 16 sts.

With B, sc in the next 23 sts.

With A, sc in the last 17 sts.

Row 12 (WS): With A, sc in the first 15 sts.

Row 34 (WS): Repeat Row 33.

On the next row, you will add and use C (the Stem color). While making your sc sts with C, carry both A and B along the WS. Catch/trap their floats every 4-6 sts (in separate sts – never in the same st).

Pattern Chart

Below is the Pattern Chart, which is the same as the “Detailed Instructions” and the “Summary Instructions” but in a chart format.

Chart Legend/Notes

White box = sc with Background color (A) on RS rows
Grey box = sc with Background color (A) on WS rows
Orange box = sc with Pumpkin color (B)
Brown box = sc with Stem color (C)

Read the chart from right to left when working on RS rows and left to right when working on WS rows.

How to follow a chart in crochet on right side rows and wrong side rows

The chart is lightly shaded on WS rows to help you remember.

Leaves

The three leaves are made continuously – do not fasten off between leaves. To adjust the length of a leaf, make more or less starting chs (any number).

Use green yarn.

Leaf 1: Ch 12.

In the third ch from the hook, dc.

Dc in each ch across.

(10 dc sts).

Leaf 2: Ch 19.

In the third ch from the hook, dc.

Dc in each ch across.

(17 dc sts).

Leaf 3: Ch 15.

In the third ch from the hook, dc.

Dc in each ch across.

(13 dc sts).

Fasten off leaving a 12” ending tail.

Weave in the starting tail.

With your yarn needle and the 12” ending tail, sew the leaves onto the front of the pillow where the stem meets the pumpkin. After the leaves are attached, weave in the loose end.

Back of Pillow

Note: The completed front panel is Piece A.

Piece B – Bottom of Back:

Start: With A (Background color), ch 57.

Row 1 (RS): In the second ch from the hook, sc.

Sc in each ch across.

Row 2 (WS): Ch 1 and turn. In the first st, sc.

Sc in each st across. (56 sc sts).

Rows 3 – 50: Repeat Row 2.

After Row 50, Piece B should measure: 12” h x 17” w.

Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

Piece C – Top of Back

Follow instructions for Piece B from Start – Row 2.

Rows 3 – 24: Repeat Row 2 (for Piece B).

Row 25 (RS): Ch 2 and turn. In the first st, dc.

Dc in each st across. (56 dc sts).

After Row 25, Piece C should measure: 6” h x 17” w.

Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

Pillow Assembly

Place Piece A (the front) face down, with the WS facing up and the stem at the top.

Place Piece B (the bottom of the back) on top of Piece A, with the RS facing up, with the last row you completed on the bottom, in line with the bottom of Piece A. The chain row of Piece B will be above the center of Piece A.

Place Piece C (the top of the back), with the RS facing up, on top of Piece B. Piece C will slightly overlap Piece B.

Pin the three pieces in place. Flip the pinned pieces over so the pumpkin is now facing up/you.

With Color A (the Background color), you will now single crochet the panels together. Always insert your hook into both (or all three) panels.

Attach yarn to bottom left corner: insert your hook into the corner of both panels, place A on hook and pull it through. Ch 1. Make a sc in that corner.

Sc in each st across the bottom.

Make 3 sc in the corner.

Repeat around pillow cover: sc across each side and make 3 sc in each corner.

At the final corner (where you started), make 2 sc.

Sl st into the first sc st made to join.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Optional: sew buttons on the RS of Piece B that will go through the dc sts made on Piece C. It would make it more secure and look lovely!

Insert your pillow insert and now you have a new pumpkin pillow!
