The pattern creates a coaster that is approximately 5” across and a coaster holder that holds 4 – 5 coasters (the holder has a base of 3” across and is 2.5” high).

Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) yarn. You will need approximately:
- For each coaster: 25 yds.
- For the holder: 40 yds.
For the coasters, I used Soft Classic yarn by Loops & Threads in the color “Arctic.” This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 354 yds / 324 m and 7 oz / 198 g.
For the holder, I used Impeccable yarn by Loops & Threads in the color “Soft Taupe.” This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz / 127.5 g.
Crochet Hook Size: G/7 (4.50 mm).
Other Materials: A stitch marker, a yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.

Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- BLO = back loop(s) only
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- hdc = half double crochet
- sc = single crochet
- sk = skip

How to Crochet the Simple Coasters
Coaster Body Instructions
The Coaster Body is worked in a continuous spiral without joining rounds with a slip stitch. Do not make any chains or turn your work at the beginning or end of any round. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round. At the start of a new round, remove the stitch marker, work into the stitch, and then place a stitch marker in that first stitch to mark the start.

Start: Make a Magic Circle.
Round 1: Make 6 sc into the Magic Circle (reminder: always place a stitch marker in the first st made in the round to mark the start).
Pull the Magic Circle tight to close.
(6 sc sts).
Reminder: for the Coaster Body, never turn.
Round 2: In the first st, 2 sc.
Make 2 sc in each st around.
(12 sc sts).
Round 3: In the first st, sc.
In the next st, 2 sc.
*In the next st, sc. In the next st, 2 sc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(18 sc sts).
After Round 3, work should measure: 1.5” across.
Round 4: Sc in the first 2 sts.
In the next st, 2 sc.
*Sc in the next 2 sts. In the next st, 2 sc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(24 sc sts).
Note: The placement of the 2 sc in the same st (the increases) changes from round to round. This helps create a more even, rounded shape.
Round 5: In the first st, sc.
*In the next st, 2 sc. Sc in the next 3 sts.*
Repeat from * to * around until there are 3 sts left.
In the next st, 2 sc. Sc in the last 2 sts.
(30 sc sts).
Round 6: Sc in the first 4 sts.
In the next st, 2 sc.
*Sc in the next 4 sts. In the next st, 2 sc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(36 sc sts).
After Round 6, work should measure: 3” across.
Round 7: Sc in the first 2 sts.
*In the next st, 2 sc. Sc in the next 5 sts.*
Repeat from * to * around until there are 4 sts left.
In the next st, 2 sc. Sc in the last 3 sts.
(42 sc sts).
Round 8 Sc in the first 6 sts.
In the next st, 2 sc.
*Sc in the next 6 sts. In the next st, 2 sc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(48 sc sts).
Round 9: Sc in the first 3 sts.
*In the next st, 2 sc. Sc in the next 7 sts.*
Repeat from * to * around until there are 5 sts left.
In the next st, 2 sc. Sc in the last 4 sts.
(54 sc sts).
After Round 9, work should measure: 4.5” across.
Join: remove the stitch marker from the first st and sl st into that first st to join. (Note: a joining sl st never gets worked into or counted as a st).
Do not fasten off. Begin the Coaster Border instructions.

Coaster Border Instructions
Border – Round 1: Ch 1 and turn (the back/wrong side of the coaster is now facing you).
Sk the first st (this is a joining sl st that never gets worked into).
In the next st, hdc. Place a stitch marker in this first hdc.
In the next st, sl st.
*In the next st, hdc. In the next st, sl st.*
Repeat from * to * around.
(27 hdc + 27 sl sts = 54 sts. Note: chs never count as sts).
Sl st into the first hdc made in the round (the st with the stitch marker) to join.
Fasten off and weave in loose ends.
Repeat the Coaster pattern to make your desired number of coasters.

How to Crochet the Coaster Holder
Holder Base Instructions
Holder Base Start – Round 6: Follow the instructions for the Coaster Body from the Start until the end of Round 6.
After Round 6, the Holder Base should measure 3” across and you should have a total of 36 sc sts.
