Crochet Soap Saver
Learn how to crochet a soap saver and make this Easy Soap Saver Crochet Pattern!

Made with durable, absorbent cotton yarn that dries quickly, this soap saver is designed to hold a bar of soap and doubles as a washcloth. The slightly textured stitches allow the soap to lather through, making it perfect for gentle scrubbing and exfoliation. The drawstring cord keeps the soap securely inside, while the built-in loop allows for easy hanging and drying between uses.

This crochet soap saver is eco-friendly as it prevents wasted soap. It makes a thoughtful handmade gift that’s super quick to make. It’s also a great item to sell at craft fairs, markets, or online shops.
The pattern includes detailed written instructions with diagrams and a step-by-step video tutorial.

Pattern Details

Size
The pattern creates a soap saver that when folded is approx. 4” wide and 5.5” high. It is designed to hold a soap bar that is approx. 3.5” long x 2.5” wide x 1” deep.

Materials
Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) and 100% cotton yarn. You will need approx. 45 yds for each soap saver.
I used 24/7 Cotton yarn by Lion Brand in the colors “Lilac” and “Succulent.” This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% cotton. A skein is 186 yds / 170 m and 3.5 oz / 100 g.
Crochet Hook Sizes: H/8 (5.00 mm) for everything but the cord and F/5 (3.75 mm) for the cord.
Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors, a measuring tape and a stitch marker.

Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sp/sps = space/spaces
- sk = skip
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- RS = right side
- WS = wrong side
- ch-2 sp = chain two space
Gauge
Sizing doesn’t need to be exact but you don’t want your soap saver to be too small. After Round 3, work when flat should measure 3.75” long and 2.5” wide.

Pattern Notes
- Chains never count as stitches.
- The slip stitch that joins the row/round never gets worked into or counted as a stitch.
- You may find it helpful to place a stitch marker in the first stitch made in each row/round.

How to Crochet the Easy Soap Saver
Soap Saver Bag Instructions
Use an H/8 (5.00 mm) hook for the entire soap saver bag.
Start: Ch 9.
For Row 1 (only) work into the back ridge loops.

Row 1: In the second ch from the hook, sc.
Sc in each ch across.
(8 sc sts).
Row 2: Ch 1 and turn.
In the first st (the st attached to the ch), sc.
Ch 2. In the next st, 2 dc.
*In the next st, sc.
Ch 2. In the next st, 2 dc.*
Repeat from * to * across.
Working into the chs on the other side (there are 8 chs to work into):
*In the next ch, sc.
Ch 2. In the next ch, 2 dc.*
Repeat from * to * across.
Sl st into the top of the first sc made in the row to join.
(24 sts. Reminder: the joining sl st and chs never count as sts.)

The pattern now changes from rows to rounds. You will turn at the start of every round. On RS rounds, the outside of your work will be facing you. On WS rounds, the inside of your work will be facing you.
Every time you made 2 chs, you created a “ch-2 sp” that you will work into on the following round. A ch-2 sp is under the 2 chs and between sc and dc sts. At the end of Row 2, you will have a total of 8 ch-2 sps.
From now on, you will only work into ch-2 sps – not into the tops of sts, except when joining the round.
Round 3 (WS): Ch 1 and turn.
In the first ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 2, 2 dc).
*In the next ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 2, 2 dc).*
Repeat from * to * around.
Sl st into the top of the first sc made in the round to join.
(24 sts and 8 ch-2 sps).

After Round 3, work when flat should measure 3.75” long and 2.5” wide. Sizing doesn’t need to be exact but you don’t want your soap saver to be too small. Measurements are provided throughout the pattern. If at any point your work is measuring differently, start again with a different hook size.
Round 4 (RS): Repeat Round 3.
Round 5 (WS): Repeat Round 3.
Round 6 (RS): Repeat Round 3.
After Round 6, work when folded should measure 4” wide and 2.75” high.
Round 7 (WS): Repeat Round 3.
Round 8 (RS): Repeat Round 3.
Round 9 (WS): Repeat Round 3.
Round 10 (RS): Repeat Round 3.
Round 11 (WS): Repeat Round 3.
Round 12 (RS): Repeat Round 3.
After Round 12, work when folded should measure 4” wide and 5.5” high.
To adjust the height of the soap saver bag, repeat Round 3 more or less times. End after completing a RS round.

After Round 12 (or your final round), you can either create a hanging loop or fasten off.
To create a hanging loop, after joining Round 12, ch 10 (or any number). Sl st into the same st (the same sc st you slip stitched into to join Round 12). Fasten off.
To fasten off: cut the yarn that’s attached to your skein and pull the end through the loop that was on your hook.
Weave in all loose ends.
Cord/String Instructions
Use a F/5 (3.75 mm) hook for the entire cord. You can use the same color as the soap saver bag or a different color. You will need approx. 5 yds of yarn for the cord.
Your finished cord should measure 12”. To adjust the size, make more or less starting chs (any number).
Start: Ch 61.
For Row 1, work into the back ridge loops.
Row 1: In the second ch from the hook, sl st.
Sl st in each ch across.
(60 sl sts).
Fasten off and weave in loose ends.
Add Cord to Soap Saver Bag
Weave cord in and out of the soap saver bag in the ch-2 sps of the second last round.
See image below for cord placement:

And now you have a new soap saver!
