Size
The pattern creates a coaster that is approx. 5.5” across.
Materials
Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) yarn. For each coaster, you will need approx. 14 yds of yellow yarn and 17 yds of blue yarn.
I used Impeccable yarn by Loops & Threads in the colors “Butterscotch” (yellow) and “Blue Moon” (blue). This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz / 127.5 g.
Crochet Hook Size: H/8 (5.00 mm).
Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.

Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sp/sps = space/spaces
- sk = skip
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- tr = triple/treble crochet
- dc2tog = double crochet two together
- ch-2 sp = chain two space
Gauge
Exact sizing is not important. For reference, after Round 2, work should measure 3.25” across.

Pattern Notes
- Chains never count as stitches.
- Your coaster will curl and look misshaped throughout the pattern but will lay flat at the end.
- The slip stitch made at the end of each round that joins the last and first stitches does not count as a stitch and does not get worked into (except during the final round as indicated in the instructions).
Stitch Explanation
In Round 2, you will make a dc2tog in the same stitch. In Round 4, you will make a dc2tog over two stitches. Here’s an explanation of how to do these stitches:
In the next st, dc2tog in the same st:
Yarn over (YO). Insert your hook into the designated st. YO and pull through a loop (3 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (2 loops on your hook). YO and insert your hook into the same st. YO and pull through a loop (4 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (3 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through the 3 loops on your hook. This completed dc2tog counts as 1 st.
Over the next 2 sts, dc2tog:
Yarn over (YO). Insert your hook into the next stitch (the first of two stitches you will be working in). YO and pull through a loop (3 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (2 loops on your hook). YO and insert your hook into the next stitch (the second of two stitches you will be working in). YO and pull through a loop (4 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook (3 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through the 3 loops on your hook. This completed dc2tog counts as 1 st.

How to Crochet the Sun Coasters (Pattern Instructions)
Start: With yellow yarn, make a Magic Circle.
Round 1: Still with yellow, ch 2.
Make 20 tr into the Magic Circle.
Pull the Magic Circle tight to close.
Sl st into the top of the first tr to join.
(20 tr sts. Reminder: chs and the joining sl st do not count as sts).
Round 2: Still with yellow, ch 2. Do not turn.
In the first st (the st attached to the chs), dc.
In the next st, dc2tog in the same st.
Ch 2.
*In the next st, dc2tog in the same st.
In the next st, dc2tog in the same st.
Ch 2.*
Repeat from * to * around.
Sl st into the top of the first dc to join.
(1 dc + 19 dc2tog = 20 sts).
Except for the starting ch-2, every time you chained 2, you created a “ch-2 sp.” You will be working into these ch-2 sps on the next round. These are the sps under the 2 chs and between dc2tog sts. There are a total of 10 ch-2 sps (the starting ch-2 does not create a ch-2 sp).
Round 3: Do not turn.
Leave yellow as is: remove your hook from the loop of yellow (pull the loop gently so it’s big and loose and won’t come undone. Do not fasten off).
Attach blue to the first ch-2 sp (the sp after the first dc2tog from the previous round): Insert your hook into the first ch-2 sp. Place blue yarn on your hook and pull it through the sp (it will be quite loose until you weave in the ends after the pattern is complete).
With blue, ch 2.
In the first ch-2 sp, make 3 dc.
Ch 1.
*In the next ch-2 sp, make 3 dc.
Ch 1.*
Repeat from * to * around.
Before joining, ensure the loop of yellow yarn and your working yellow yarn (the yellow yarn attached to your yellow skein) are in front of the blue yarn.
Sl st into the top of the first dc made in the round to join.
(30 dc sts).

Round 4: Do not turn.
Leave blue as is: remove your hook from the loop of blue (pull the loop gently so it’s big and loose and won’t come undone. Do not fasten off).
Pick up yellow: insert your hook into the loop of yellow and pull everything tight.
With yellow, ch 2.
For this round, you will only be working into the tops of yellow sts made in Round 2 and ignoring the sts made in blue in Round 3. Push the blue sts to the back and away from your work.
Sk the first yellow st (the st attached to the chs).
In the next yellow st, dc.
Ch 5.
*Over the next 2 yellow sts, dc2tog.
Ch 5.*
Repeat from * to * around.
Sl st into the top of the first yellow dc made in the round to join.
(1 dc + 9 dc2tog = 10 sts).
Fasten off yellow: cut the yellow strand attached to your yellow skein and pull the end through the loop of yellow that was on your hook.

Round 5: Do not turn.
Pick up blue: insert your hook into the loop of blue and pull everything tight.
With blue, ch 1.
For this round, you will only be working into the tops of the blue dc sts made in Round 3. You will be working around the yellow ch-5 made in Round 4 – ensure the yellow ch-5 is over your hook when making your sts so your new blue sts cover the yellow ch-5.
In the first blue st (the st attached to the ch) and working around the yellow ch-5, make 2 sc.
*In the next blue st and working around the yellow ch-5, make 2 sc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
Sl st into the top of the first sc made in the round to join.
(60 sc sts).

Round 6: Still with blue, ch 1 and turn (the back of your work is now facing you).
In the st attached to the ch (which is the sl st that joined the previous round), (sl st, hdc) meaning to make a sl st and an hdc st in this same st.
*In the next st, sl st.
In the next st, hdc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
Sl st into the first sl st made in the round to join.
(31 sl sts + 31 hdc = 62 sts).
Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

And now you have a new sun coaster!
