Size
The pattern creates a keychain that is approx. 4โ across.

Materials
Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) yarn in yellow and black. For each keychain, you will need approx. 23 yds of yellow yarn and 3 yds of black yarn.
I used Impeccable yarn by Loops & Threads in the colors โSunny Dayโ and โBlack.โ This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz / 127.5 g.
Crochet Hook Size: G/7 (4.50 mm).
Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors, a measuring tape, a small amount of polyester stuffing and a keychain ring.
Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, hereโs my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- RS = right side
- WS = wrong side

Gauge
Exact sizing is not important. For reference, after Round 2, my work measured 2โ across.
Pattern Notes
- Chains never count as stitches.
- The slip stitch that joins a round never gets worked into and never gets counted as a stitch.

How to Crochet the Sun Keychain (Pattern Instructions)
Piece A (The Back of the Sun)
Start: With yellow yarn, make a Magic Circle (continue using yellow for the entire piece).
Round 1: Ch 1.
Make 8 sc into the Magic Circle.
Pull the Magic Circle tight to close.
Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.
(8 sc sts. Reminder: the joining sl st and chs never count as sts).
Round 2: Ch 1. Do not turn.
In the first st (the st attached to the ch), 2 sc.
*In the next st, 2 sc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
Sl st into the top of the first sc made in the round to join.
(16 sc sts).
Round 3: Ch 1. Do not turn.
In the first st (the st attached to the ch), 2 sc.
In the next st, sc.
*In the next st, 2 sc.
In the next st, sc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
Sl st into the top of the first sc made in the round to join.
(24 sc sts).
Round 4: Ch 1. Do not turn.
In the first st (the st attached to the ch), 2 sc.
Sc in the next 2 sts.
*In the next st, 2 sc.
Sc in the next 2 sts.*
Repeat from * to * around.
Sl st into the top of the first sc made in the round to join.
(32 sc sts).
Fasten off (cut the yarn thatโs attached to your skein and pull the end through the loop that was on your hook). Weave in all loose ends.
Piece B (The Front of the Sun)
Complete the instructions for Piece A from the Start until the end of Round 4.
After completing Round 4, do not fasten off (just remove your hook and pull the loop slightly so it does not come undone).
Weave in the starting tail.
Sunglasses
Start: With black yarn, leave a 12โ tail and ch 5. Continue using black yarn for the entire sunglasses.
For all of Row 1, work into the back ridge loops.

Row 1: In the second ch from the hook, make 4 sc.
In the next ch, sl st.
In the next ch, sl st.
In the last ch, make 5 sc. Sl st in the same ch.
Fasten off leaving a 12โ tail.
If necessary, use the starting tail and your yarn needle to fix any gaps in the middle of the sc sts (sew the sts together).
Weave the starting tail into the back of the sunglasses.
With your yarn needle, use the ending tail to attach the sunglasses to the RS of Piece B, centered and just above the middle.
Weave the ending tail into the WS of Piece B.

Mouth
Cut a 15โ strand of black yarn. With your yarn needle and the strand of black yarn, make the mouth on the RS of Piece B in between Rounds 2 & 3, below the middle.
To make a smirk, weave the yarn in and out over 3 sts (you can make a smirk on either side. My last st of the smirk was in the center). To make a bigger smile, weave the yarn in and out centered over 5 sts.
When finished, tie the ends of the strand in a knot and cut the tails.
Attaching Piece A & B
Attaching Round: Pick up Piece B: Insert hook into the loop of your working yarn attached to Piece B and pull everything tight (the RS of Piece B should be facing you).
Ch 1. Do not turn (you will continue working in the same direction as all previous rounds).
Place Piece A on the back of Piece B with the WS on the inside. Line up the sts of both pieces.
Insert your hook into the first st of Piece B and the first st of Piece A and sc.
*Insert your hook into the next st of Piece B and the next st of Piece A and sc.*
Repeat from * to * until you are three quarters of the way around.
When you have a quarter left, fill with stuffing (break the stuffing into small pieces and stuff evenly – do not overstuff).
After stuffing, resume: *insert your hook into the next st of Piece B and the next st of Piece A and sc.*
Repeat from * to * around.
Sl st into the top of the first sc made in the round to join.
(32 sc sts).

Final Round (the โSun Raysโ): Ch 1. Do not turn.
For all of this round, you will be working in the sts made in the Attaching Round.
In the first st, sc. Ch 2. In the second ch from the hook,
sl st in the top loop of the ch.
In the same st (as your first sc), sc.
In the next st, sl st.
*In the next st, sc. Ch 2. In the second ch from the hook, sl st in the top loop of the ch.
In the same st (as your last sc), sc.
In the next st, sl st.*
Repeat from * to * around.
After your last st (the sl st in the last st), create a hanging loop: ch 10 (or any number to make the loop a different size). Sl st in the same st (as your last sl st).
(16 โsun raysโ made).
Fasten off. Weave in the ending tail. Attach a keychain ring to the hanging loop.

And now you have a new sun keychain!
