Size
The pattern creates mittens designed to fit adult women’s hands. Each finished mitten is 4.5” wide, 11” high and has a 3.5” high thumb.

Materials
Any size 6 (super bulky) yarn. You will need approximately 130 yds to make 2 mittens (65 yds for each mitten).
I used Bernat Baby Blanket yarn in the color “Mellow Mauve.” This yarn is size 6 (super bulky) and 100% polyester. A skein is 220 yds / 201 m and 10.5 oz / 300 g. I used less than 1 skein for 2 mittens.
Crochet Hook Size: K/10.5 (6.50 mm).
Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors, stitch markers and a measuring tape.
Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- BPhdc = back post half double crochet
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- hdc = half double crochet
- FPhdc = front post half double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- sk = skip
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
Gauge
After Round 2, work should measure 3.25” across. Measurements are provided throughout the pattern. If at any point your work is measuring differently, start again with a different hook size.
Pattern Notes
- There is no right or left mitten. The mitten can be worn on either hand.
- Chains never count as stitches.
- Never turn at the start or end of any round.
- The joining slip stitch never gets counted as a stitch. Except when specifically instructed, it never gets worked into.
- The first stitch of a round is the same stitch that you slip stitch into to join the previous round. It is the stitch attached to the chain(s).
- You may find it helpful to place a stitch marker in the first stitch made in each round.

Stitch Explanations
For the Mitten Cuff you will be making front and back post half double crochet stitches. If these stitches are new to you, here’s how to make them:
Front Post Half Double Crochet (FPhdc):
Yarn over, insert your hook from the front to the back at the right of the designated stitch and bring your hook out at the left of the same stitch. Then finish your half double crochet stitch as you normally would: yarn over and pull through a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through all 3 loops on your hook.
Back Post Half Double Crochet (BPhdc):
Yarn over, insert your hook from the back to the front at the right of the designated stitch and bring your hook out at the left of the same stitch. Then finish your half double crochet stitch as you normally would: yarn over and pull through a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through all 3 loops on your hook.

- Weave the tail from front to back, IN the next st.

*Weave the tail, from back to front, OUT the next st. Weave the tail, front to back, IN the next st.*
Repeat from * to * around.
Pull the tail tight to close the top of the thumb.
