Pattern Details
Skill Level
The skill level for this pattern is easy.
Size
The pattern creates a scarf that is approximately 8” wide and 66” long (before adding the tassels). Instructions for adjusting the size are included in the pattern.
Materials
Any size 6 (super bulky) yarn.* You will need approximately 280 yds in total.
*Please keep in mind that super bulky yarns can vary significantly between brands and colors (some are much thicker or thinner than others). Because of this, your work may measure quite differently than mine. Refer to the “How to Adjust the Size” section if you would like to adjust the size.
I used Bernat Blanket yarn in the color “Shadow Purple.” This yarn is size 6 (super bulky) and 100% polyester. A skein is 220 yds / 201 m and 10.5 oz / 300 g. I used 1.25 skeins.
Crochet Hook Size: K/10.5 (6.50 mm).
Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape. Optional: a stitch marker.
Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- dc = double crochet
- sc = single crochet
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
Gauge
Exact sizing is not important. For reference, 4” x 4” = 9 sts and 6 rows following the pattern.
Pattern Notes
- The scarf is completely reversible and looks the same on both sides.
- Chains never count as stitches.
- Always work into the first stitch (the stitch attached to the chain/chains).
- You will leave an 8” tail at the start and end. When you add the tassels, you can incorporate these tails into the tassels instead of weaving them in.
- You may find it helpful to place a stitch marker in the top of the first stitch made in every row.
- The width can fluctuate at the start. Wait to measure your work until you have completed several rows. If after several rows, you are not happy with the width, start again with a different hook size or different number of starting chains (refer to the “How to Adjust the Size” section).
How to Adjust the Size
The number of starting chains determines the width and the number of rows determines the length. To adjust the width, make more or less starting chains (any number – there is no specific multiple required).
To adjust the length, make more or less rows.

Row 4 and on: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 consecutively until the height/length of your work measures 66” or until you reach your desired size. End after a repeat of Row 3.
My finished scarf (before adding the tassels) was 8” wide and 66” long and had a total of 97 rows.
Fasten off, leaving an 8” tail.
Tassels
Preparing Your Yarn
The scarf has 14 tassels in total (7 tassels on the bottom and 7 tassels on the top). Each tassel is made with 2 strands of yarn. Each strand of yarn is 16” long. You will need 28 strands that are 16” long.
You can make the tassels shorter or longer by cutting smaller or bigger strands.
Tip for cutting the strands: find an object that is 8” wide (a piece of cardboard, a notebook, etc). Wrap your yarn around the 8” object 28 times (each wrap = 1 strand). Cut the yarn in half.
How to Attach the Tassels
It doesn’t matter which side of the scarf (front or back) you attach the tassels to, just ensure it’s the same for the bottom and top.
A) Insert your hook from the back of the scarf to the front. Take the strands of yarn, fold them in half and place them on your hook.
B) With your hook, pull the folded ends through the scarf (which creates a loop).
C) Pull the ends through the loop. (If you are incorporating your loose ends into the tassels and if there is a tail/end nearby, pull it through the loop).
D) Pull tight to make a knot.

Repeat steps A) – D) for each tassel. Attach 7 tassels evenly spaced across the bottom of the scarf and across the top of the scarf.
Once all tassels are attached, trim the strands to make them all one length. I cut mine to be 6” long.

Learn how to add fringe/tassels and cut the ends perfectly.
Optional: To prevent fraying ends, tie a small knot at the end of each strand.

And now you have a new scarf!
