Crochet Water Bottle Holder

On a hot summer day, I was taking Charlie for a walk and wanted to bring my reusable bottle of water. I didn’t want to hold it the whole time and I didn’t want to have to bring a backpack. Crochet to the rescue!

With this Water Bottle Holder, you can now walk the dog or go on any adventure with your water without needing to hold it or bring a bag.

While a plastic bottle is in the image, I am a huge advocate for using reusable water bottles instead of plastic so this pattern is designed to fit both.

I found a total of 10 different reusable water bottles in our house of all different sizes and they all fit in this holder.

Size

This pattern comes in two sizes (small and medium) to fit water bottles with diameters from 2.5” – 3.5”, which should hold most plastic and reusable water bottles. The height and strap are customizable. More details throughout the pattern.

Gauge

4′′ x 4′′ = 13 sc and 15 rows

Crochet Hook Size: H/8 (5.00mm) or size needed to obtain gauge.

Other Materials: yarn needle, scissors, pins, measuring tape.

Abbreviations

st = stitch
sts = stitches
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
YO = yarn over
BLO = back loops only

Crochet Water Bottle Holder Pattern Notes

  • The holder is made from the bottom up.
  • It is worked in a continuous round – do not turn after each round (unless instructed to).
  • Always start a round in the same stitch as the chain.
  • Chains never count as stitches.
  • The pattern starts with a magic ring (magic circle). Here’s a tutorial on how to make a magic ring

Sizing Instructions

The pattern comes in two sizes: Small and Medium. Measure your water bottle’s diameter (a straight line from one end point, through the center, to another end point) and follow the instructions for your size.

Small = a water bottle with a diameter of 2.5” (such as a 500 ml plastic water bottle)

Medium (Med) = a water bottle with a diameter of

2.75” – 3.5” (most reusable water bottles are this size)

The height of the pattern is customizable so you can continue making rounds until your desired height.  The strap size is also customizable and instructions for adjusting the strap size is included in the strap section.

YO and pull yarn through all 6 loops. Ch 1 to complete the 1st star.

Regular Star (the image below shows exact locations): Insert hook into the ch 1 space that you just created (the eye of the star) and pull through loop (2 loops on hook). The star you just created has 6 “spikes,” with the 1st spike being closest to the top. Insert your hook in between the 5th and 6th spike and pull through loop (3 loops on hook). The 6th spike is attached to the next st. Insert your hook into the st attached to 6th spike and pull through loop (4 loops on hook). Insert hook into next st and pull through loop (5 loops on hook). Insert hook into next st and pull through loop (6 loops on hook). YO and pull yarn through all 6 loops. Ch 1 to complete the star.

Where to Insert Hook for Regular Stars

Last Star: Insert hook into the ch 1 space and pull through loop (2 loops on hook). Insert your hook in between the 5th and 6th spike and pull through loop (3 loops on hook). Insert your hook into the st attached to 6th spike and pull through loop (4 loops on hook). Insert hook into last st and pull through loop (5 loops on hook). Insert hook into the bottom of the ch 3 that started the round and pull through loop (6 loops on hook). YO and pull yarn through all 6 loops. Ch 1 to complete the star.

Sl st into the top of the 1st st of the round to join.

(All Sizes) Round 3: Ch 1. 2 hdc into the eye of each star across. (Small: 30 sts, Med: 40 sts). Sl st into top of 1st hdc to join.

(All Sizes): Repeat Round 2 & 3 until your desired height. After happy with your height, do not fasten off.

For reference, 9 rounds creates a height of 4.25”.

Crochet Water Bottle Holder Strap

Strap Notes

  • You will start the strap from the place you just left off. The other side of the strap is sewn on after completed.
  • You can make the strap any size you’d like by adjusting the number of starting chains in multiples of 2 + 1 (an odd number).
  • Remember that the strap will stretch when your water bottle is filled with water.
  • The strap measurements after the first row will be significantly less than the measurements after both rows are completed.

Check Your Strap Size (Optional)

The size of your strap will depend on your tension and your yarn. Some crocheters’ straps turn out to be much shorter than mine. For that reason, before you begin the strap, although not completely necessary, I do recommend checking to see if your measurements match mine. If they don’t, you can adjust your number of starting chains to get the size you would like (example sizes and number of starting chains are provided on the following page).

My Strap Measurements: chained 39 and followed Strap Instructions for Row 1 & 2 (17 stars created) = 10” x 1.25”

How to Check and Calculate Strap Starting Chains:

  • Ch 39 and follow Strap Instructions for Row 1 & 2.
  • Measure the length of your strap in inches. Make note of this number.
  • Determine your desired length strap length in inches (example sizes are below) and make note of this number.
  • Use this Strap Calculator to determine how many starting chains you should make.

Strap Sizing & Starting Chains

Kid-Size Strap: for a strap that’s 33′′, ch 121. (This size makes the bottle holder (when water bottle is empty) land at the hip of a child who is 4’ tall when wearing the holder cross body).

Adult-Size Strap: for a strap that’s 44”, ch 161. (This size makes the bottle holder (when water bottle is empty) land at the hip of an adult who is 5.8’ tall when wearing the holder cross body).

Strap Instructions

Note: I recommend working in the back ridge loops of each ch for a nice strap edge.

Where to crochet in the chain

Row 1: Starting Star: Insert hook into the back ridge loop of the 2nd ch from hook and pull through loop. Insert hook and pull through loops in each of the next 4 chains (you will have 6 loops on hook). YO and pull yarn through all 6 loops on hook. Ch 1.

Regular Star: Insert hook into the ch 1 space that you just created (the eye of the star) and pull through loop (2 loops on hook). Insert your hook in between the 5th and 6th spike and pull through loop (3 loops on hook). Insert your hook in the ch attached to 6th spike and pull through loop (4 loops on hook). Insert hook into back ridge loop of next ch and pull through loop (5 loops on hook). Insert hook into back ridge loop of next ch and pull through loop (6 loops on hook). YO and pull through all 6 loops. Ch 1 to complete the star.

Continue making regular stars all the way down the chain until there is one chain left.

Last Star: Insert hook into the ch 1 space and pull through loop (2 loops on hook). Insert your hook in between the 5th and 6th spike and pull through loop (3 loops on hook). Insert your hook into the st attached to 6th spike and pull through loop (4 loops on hook). Insert hook into top loop of last ch and pull through loop (5 loops on hook). Insert hook into next st on the water bottle holder (the st attached to the chain) (ensure that the right side of the strap is facing up) and pull through loop (6 loops on hook). YO and pull yarn through all 6 loops. Ch 1 to complete the star.

Sl st into next 2 sts on water bottle holder.

diagram

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn. 2 hdc into the eye of each star across. Hdc in the last st.

Row 3: Ch 1. Create 4 sc sts down across the end (this helps create a straight edge that you will use to attach the strap to the holder) (4 sc sts).

Diagram

Attaching the Strap

You will attach the recently finished end to the exact opposite side from the strap that is already attached. The recently finished end will be attached across 4 sts on the water bottle holder.

Find the exact placement, ensure that the stars are facing up and the strap isn’t twisted and pin in place.

Turn your water bottle holder and strap inside out.

Using your yarn needle, weave in and out across the end and back again to attach the 4 sc to the top of the holder.

Weave in loose ends.
