Pattern Details

Size
- With size 3 (light) yarn, the blanket is approx. 42” wide and 50” high.
- With size 4 (medium) yarn, the blanket is approx. 48” wide and 62” high.
Instructions for adjusting the size are included below.

About the Pattern
- This pattern is made with 5 colors in the following order: pink, yellow, green, blue and purple.
- Each color is used for 3 rows (except at the start when the first color (pink) is used from the start until the end of Row 4).
- This color combination is repeated a total of 5 times.
- The pattern has a total of 76 rows.

You can easily use a different number of colors or different color combinations. To help you determine how much yarn you will need, the amount of yarn required for each row is noted below.
Materials
Yarn: You can use any size 3 (light) yarn or any size 4 (medium) yarn.
If using size 3 (light) yarn:
You will need approx. 430 yds x 5 colors (2,150 yds in total). Each row requires approx. 28 yds x 76 rows.
As seen in the photos, I used Snuggly Wuggly Yarn by Loops & Threads. This yarn is size 3 (light) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 446 yds / 408 m and 5 oz / 141 g.
I used 5 skeins in total (1 skein of each of the following colors: “Fairy Tale” (pink), “Yellow,” “Light Green,” “Pale Blue,” “Soft Lilac” (purple)).
If using size 4 (medium) yarn:
You will need approx. 495 yds of x 5 colors (2,515 yds in total). Each row requires approx. 33 yds x 76 rows.
Crochet Hook Size:
- If using size 3 (light) yarn: H/8 (5.00 mm).
- If using size 4 (medium) yarn: I/9 (5.50 mm).
Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.
Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sp/sps = space/spaces
- sk = skip
- sl st = slip stitch
- dc = double crochet
Gauge
Exact sizing is not important. For reference, 4” x 4” =
- Using size 3 (light) yarn: 14 dc sts and 8 rows.
- Using size 4 (medium) yarn: 11 dc sts and 7 rows.
Pattern for gauge: ch 23. Row 1: In the third ch from hook, dc. Dc in each st across. Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. Dc in the first st and in each st across.

How to Adjust the Size
The number of starting chains determines the width and the number of rows determines the height. To adjust the width, make more or less starting chains in multiples of 50 + 2 (meaning to take any number that you can divide by 50 and add 2 to that number). To adjust the height, make more or less rows.
To help you determine how many chains you will need to make the blanket a different size, each multiple of 50 chains is approx.:
- Using size 3 (light) yarn: 10.5” wide
- Using size 4 (medium) yarn: 12” wide
Pattern Notes
- Chains never count as stitches.
- When the pattern has [instructions in brackets] x 3, it means to complete the instructions in the brackets a total of three times.
- Change colors at the end of a row by placing the new color on your hook and pulling it through the loop of the old/current color on your hook. Fasten off the old color (meaning to cut the yarn that’s attached to the skein). With your new color, begin the next row.
- Every time you make 3 double crochet stitches in one stitch or space it counts as a cluster.
- A cluster space is the space in between 3 double crochet stitches.

How to Crochet the Zig Zag Granny Stitch Blanket (Pattern Instructions)
Start: With pink yarn, ch 202.
For Row 1 (only) work into the back ridge loops.

Row 1: Continue using pink.
In the second ch from the hook, sl st VERY loosely.
In each ch across, sl st VERY loosely.
(201 sts).
Making the first row with sl sts helps stop the blanket from curling.
Note: the width of your blanket will grow after several rows. If after several rows, you would like to make it a different size, you can start again with a different number of starting chains (in multiples of 50 + 2).

Row 2: Continue using pink. Ch 2 and turn.
In the first st (the st attached to the ch-2), make 1 dc.
[Sk the next 2 sts. In the next st, make 3 dc.] x 3.
Peak: Sk the next 2 sts. In the next st, make 3 dc.
Ch 2. In the next st, make 3 dc.
[Sk the next 2 sts. In the next st, make 3 dc.] x 2.
*Valley: Sk the next 2 sts. In the next st, make 3 dc.
Sk the next 5 sts. In the next st, make 3 dc.

[Sk the next 2 sts. In the next st, make 3 dc.] x 2.*
Repeat from * to * across until there are 6 sts left.
Sk the next 2 sts. In the next st, make 3 dc.
Sk the next 2 sts. In the last st, make 1 dc.
Stitch count: 194 dc sts (2 dc + 64 clusters). Reminder: chs never count as sts.
Row 3: Continue using pink. Ch 2 and turn.
Reminder: cluster sps are the sps in between the 3 dc sts. You will work into the top of the first and last sts of the row, otherwise, you will only be working into cluster sps.
In the top of the first st (the st attached to the ch-2), dc.
(The sp between the first dc and first cluster does not get worked into).
[In the next cluster sp, make 3 dc.] x 3.
Peak: In the ch-2 sp, make (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).
[In the next cluster sp, make 3 dc.] x 3.
*Valley: Sk the next cluster sp.
[In the next cluster sp, make 3 dc.] x 3.
Peak: In the ch-2 sp, make (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).
[In the next cluster sp, make 3 dc.] x 3.*
Repeat from * to * across.
(The sp between the last cluster and the ch-2 does not get worked into).
In the top of the last st, dc.
Stitch count: 194 dc sts (2 dc + 64 clusters).

The rest of the pattern is repeating Row 3. You can repeat Row 3 as many times as you would like. You can end after any row.
To follow the exact color combinations that I used, follow the directions below.

Row 4: Still with pink, repeat Row 3.
After Row 4, fasten off pink. Change to yellow (see pattern notes for details). From now on, the pattern only indicates when to start a new color. Remember to fasten off your old color.
Rows 5 – 7: With yellow, repeat Row 3.
Rows 8 – 10: With green, repeat Row 3.
Rows 11 – 13: With blue, repeat Row 3.
Rows 14 – 16: With purple, repeat Row 3.
(First repeat completed).
Rows 17 – 19: With pink, repeat Row 3.
Rows 20 – 22: With yellow, repeat Row 3.
Rows 23 – 25: With green, repeat Row 3.
Rows 26 – 28: With blue, repeat Row 3.
Rows 29 – 31: With purple, repeat Row 3.
(Second repeat completed).
Rows 32 – 46: Repeat Rows 17 – 31. (Third repeat).
