Lumberjack Crochet Can Cozy

Introducing a delightful and distinct Lumberjack Crochet Can Cozy Pattern – an ideal gift for those who enjoy beverages and the great outdoors. Drawing inspiration from the enduring charm of buffalo plaid and flannel jackets, this crochet pattern is crafted to hold standard 12 fl oz / 355 ml cans.

The plaid look that is seen on the jacket is made by crocheting with multiple colors, which is also called colorwork. If you haven’t attempted colorwork before, don’t be afraid! I have a full guide and video tutorial (included below) on how to crochet with two or more colors.

Lumberjack Crochet Can Cozy Pattern

I chose to make my lumberjack can cozy in buffalo plaid using red, burgundy and black but you can use any three colors. These can cozies are quick to make so you could make a number of plaid flannel jackets in a variety of colors. Consider making them for craft shows – they’re sure to be a hit!

These crochet can cozies make terrific gifts for men, friends, coworkers and family members. Wondering what to get for the person who has everything? I can almost guarantee they don’t have a homemade crochet lumberjack can cozy! Since this plaid look is fashionable all year long, you can give it as a Christmas gift or for any occasion.

Here are what crocheters are saying about this can cozy:

  • “I need this in my life!”
  • “This is so stinking cute!”
  • “What a creative pattern!”
  • “It’s very easy to follow.”
  • “That is so adorable!!”

The beer holder / drink jacket is a versatile companion for camping by the fire, returning home after getting your Christmas tree or backyard celebrations. It’s a stylish and practical crochet can holder that anyone would love to receive as a gift and will actually use!

Pattern Details

Skill Level

Easy (colorwork and simple stitches)

Size

The pattern creates a cozy that holds a standard 355 ml / 12 fl oz can (a can that is approx. 2.75” wide and 5” high). The finished cozy is approx. 3” wide and 4” high.

Materials

Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) yarn in three colors. You will need approx.:

  • A) Burgundy – 32 yds / 13 g
  • B) Red – 25 yds / 10 g
  • C) Black – 25 yds / 10 g

I used Impeccable yarn by Loops & Threads in the colors: A) “Burgundy,” B) “Cherry” (red), and C) “Black.” This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz / 127.5 g.

Crochet Hook Size: G/7 (4.50 mm).

Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sts = stitches
  • sk = skip
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • BLO = back loops only
  • FLO = front loops only
  • RS = right side
  • WS = wrong side

Gauge

After Round 3, work should measure 3” across.

Colorwork

For the body and the sleeves, you will be working with multiple colors and changing colors mid-way through your last st before a color change. Each stitch is a hdc st. Here’s how to change colors: on the last st before a color change, with your current color, yarn over and insert your hook into the next st. Yarn over and pull through a loop (3 loops on your hook). Place the new color on your hook. Pull the new color through the 3 loops on your hook.

Except for the last round of the body, you will always drop the unused color and pick it up when you need it again. There will be some small floats from doing this but they are only visible from the inside.

For the last round of the body, you will work over the unused color (so the floats are not seen). To do this, place the unused color over the top of the next st, treat it as part of the stitch and crochet over it.

If you are new to colorwork, here is my guide on How to Crochet with Two or More Colors

Right and Wrong Sides

For the body and sleeves, you will turn after each round. For right side (RS) rounds, the outside of your work will be facing you. For wrong side (WS) rounds, the inside of your work will be facing you. Ensure that all strands are always kept on the WS.

Pattern Notes

  • This can cozy is made from the bottom up.
  • Chains never count as stitches.
  • The pattern indicates which is the first stitch of each round.
  • When changing colors, ensure all strands are kept on the wrong side of your work.
  • Change colors when you have three loops of the old color on the hdc stitch BEFORE the new color stitch.

Color Legend

I used: A = Burgundy, B = Red and C = Black.

You are welcome to use different colors.

Attaching the Sleeves

Using the 10” tails, attach the sleeves with one end on “the shoulder” and one end on “a pocket.” For the shoulder, I attached one end to Round 9, approx. 3” away from the middle (where you started/ended each round).  For the pocket, I attached the other end in between Rounds 2 and 3, approx. 2.5” away from the middle. Attach all around the sleeve opening. Weave in loose ends.
