Crochet Tote Bag Pattern Details

Size
The pattern creates a tote bag that is approx. 11” high, 16” long and 4” deep with straps that are 10” away from the bag.

Materials
Yarn: Approx. 860 yds in total of any worsted weight, size 4 (medium) yarn (the less stretchy the better). This pattern is worked with two strands of yarn held together for the entire pattern so you can either separate your yarn manually or use multiple skeins. You will need 2 x 430 yds.
I used Pound of Love in the color “Olive.” This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% premium acrylic. A skein is 1020 yds / 932 m and 16 oz / 448 g.
Crochet Hook: K/10.5 (6.50 mm).
Other Materials: yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape, a stitch marker and pins.

Gauge
4” x 4” = 7 sc and 13 rows (following the bag body pattern)
Terminology
This Tote Bag Crochet Pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- st = stitch
- sts = stitches
- sk = skip
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- ch-1 sp = chain 1 space
- ch-2 sp = chain 2 space

Pattern Notes
- Use two strands of yarn held together for the entire pattern, treating them as one strand and crocheting normally.
- The tote bag is made from the bottom up. The bottom and body are worked in the round – never turn at the end of a round.
- Chains never count as stitches.
- Always work into the first stitch, the stitch attached to the chain. If the instructions for the beginning of the round say “next st,” work into the first stitch (the stitch attached to the chain).
- Always put a stitch marker in the top of the first single crochet stitch of every round to help ensure you start and end in the right place and you have the correct number of stitches.
- If the instructions say “[2 sc in next st. Sc in next st.] x 2,” what this means is to complete the steps in brackets a total of two times (i.e. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next st.).

Round 7: Ch 1. Sc in the back loops only (the loops furthest away from you) of each st around. (104 sts). Sl st into both loops of the top of the first sc to join.

Do not fasten off. The round numbers will now reset to make it easier to count rounds from the bottom up.
Note: As you work on the tote bag body, you will notice that the right side (the top) of the bottom you just completed will be facing down and will be on the outside bottom of the tote bag.

Crochet Tote Bag Body
Round 1: Ch 1. Reminder: never turn. Sc in the first st. *Ch 1. Sk the next st. Sc in the next st.* Repeat from * to * around until there is 1 st left (after your last sc). Ch 1. Sk the last st. Sl st into the top of the first sc to join. (52 sc sts – reminder: chains never count as sts).
Note: every time you ch 1 and sk a st, you are creating a “chain 1 space” (ch-1 sp) that you will work into on the next round.
Round 2: Sl st into the first ch-1 sp. Ch 1. Sc in the same ch-1 sp as the sl st. *Ch 1. Sc in the next ch-1 sp.* Repeat from * to * around. (52 sc sts). After your last sc, do not ch 1. Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.

Note: every time you ch 1 and sc into a ch-1 sp, you are creating a new ch-1 sp that you will work into on the next round.
Round 3: Ch 1. Sc in the first st (the top of the first sc from the previous round). *Ch 1. Sc in the next ch-1 sp.* Repeat from * to * around. (52 sc sts). After your last sc, there is a slight gap but it is not a ch-1 sp and doesn’t get worked into. After your last sc, ch 1. Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.

Work after Round 3 should measure approx. 16” long and 1.5” high.
Round 4 and on: Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 consecutively until your work measures 11” high (approx. 32 rounds in total).
End after repeating a Round 2 (not a Round 3).
Once you’ve reached 11” high, fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

Straps
Start: With two strands of yarn held together, leave a 30” starting tail (for both strands). Using a K/10.5 (6.50 mm) hook, chain 7.
Row 1: In the third ch from hook, sc. (Note: by working into the third ch, the first and second chains will be used as a “chain 2 space” (ch-2 sp) that you will work into on the next row). Ch 1. Sk next ch. Sc in next ch. (Ch-1 sp created). Ch 1. Sk the next ch. Sc in the last ch. (Ch-1 sp created). (3 sc sts).
Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. Sc in the first ch-1 sp. (This creates a new ch-2 sp). Ch 1. Sc in the next ch-1 sp. (New ch-1 sp created). Ch 1. Sc into the ch-2 sp (this space can be tight and hard to see). (New ch-1 sp created). (3 sc sts).

Repeat Row 2 until your strap measures 40” long (approx. 114 rows). Fasten off, leaving a 30” tail (for both strands).
Make two straps.
Strap Placement
The straps go on the inside of the bag, 4” from the side, with the ends 1” from the bottom. There should be a height of approx. 10” from the top of the bag to the top of the straps.

Attaching the Straps
Turn bag inside out. Pin straps in place.
Using the 30” tails (one strand at a time) and yarn needle, attach strap to inside of tote bag body, only working into the backs of stitches to ensure yarn does not show through the front. Attach all around.
Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

And now you have a new tote bag!
