Scarves are one of the most popular things to crochet. Whether you are a beginner crocheter or a pro, scarves are wonderful and useful crochet projects that you can make for yourself or as a gift. But with all the crochet patterns for scarves, it can be difficult to find a good crochet scarf pattern.

To save you time searching, I’ve rounded up some of the very best crochet patterns for scarves so you can easily find your next pattern.

What Materials Do You Need to Crochet a Scarf?

Each scarf pattern is different but generally, you will need five crochet supplies to crochet a scarf.

1. A Crochet Hook – Each crochet scarf pattern will specify the hook size you will need. The crochet hook size along with the yarn weight will determine the overall look, feel and size of your scarf.
2. Yarn – The most popular yarn weight for a crochet scarf is size 4 (medium). However, there are lots of patterns that use size 3 (light) for a softer, lighter scarf and there are many patterns that use a size 5 (bulky) yarn for a chunky scarf.
3. Scissors – You’ll need scissors to cut yarn.
4. Yarn Needle – A yarn/tapestry needle is used to weave in loose ends.
5. Measuring Tape – A measuring tape is used to check the gauge or to measure your work.

How Many Skeins Do You Need To Crochet a Scarf?

In general, crochet scarf patterns usually require 400 – 500 yds of yarn or 2 – 3 skeins of yarn. How many skeins you will need depends on the brand of yarn and how many yards are in a skein. For example, Impeccable Yarn by Loops and Threads has 285 yds in a skein. If you were using this yarn, and the pattern required 400 yds of yarn, you would need two skeins. However, the amount of yarn required to crochet a scarf greatly depends on the type of yarn used, the stitches used in the pattern and the size of the scarf.

Best Yarn Type for a Scarf

There are two types of yarn that are very popular for making crochet scarves:

• Acrylic yarn – acrylic yarn is a very versatile yarn and a top choice for crochet scarves. It is washable, cozy and easy to use. The Men’s Crochet Scarf Pattern (pictured above) uses acrylic yarn.
• Polyester yarn – velvet yarn, made from polyester is another great choice for scarves as it creates a bulky, soft and warm scarf like this Chunky Crochet Scarf Pattern (pictured below).

You can also experiment with other types of yarn that you can use including mixed blends. There really isn’t a bad yarn for crocheting a scarf!

Crochet Scarf Sizes

How Wide Should a Crochet Scarf Be?

On average, crochet scarves are between 5″ – 8″ wide for a standard scarf. Often scarf patterns for children have a width of 5″ – 6″ and scarf patterns for adults have a width of 7″ – 8″.

This Kids Crochet Scarf Pattern (pictured above) creates a scarf that is approx. 5.5″ wide.

How Long Should a Crochet Scarf Be?

The length of a scarf is usually determined by who the scarf pattern is for (a child, woman, man, etc.) and that person’s height. You don’t need the scarf to be exactly the person’s height, the rule that the scarf length should be equal to the person’s height is more of a guideline to make the scarf an appropriate size.

What are the Best Stitches for a Crochet Scarf?

• The Suzette Stitch is another beautiful stitch and is used in my Chunky Crochet Scarf Pattern.

How to Crochet a Scarf

1. With your yarn and a crochet hook, make a foundation row of starting chains.

There are two main ways how to crochet a scarf – either from the width up or the length up. For example, in my Simple Scarf Pattern (pictured above) the number of starting chains determines the width and the number of rows determines the height. Making 21 starting chains creates a scarf that is approx. 7″ wide. Then you follow the pattern until the scarf is approx. 6′ long (or your desired length).

On the other hand, my Easy Infinity Scarf Pattern (pictured above) is made from the length up. The number of starting chains determines the length and the number of rows determines how wide the scarf will be.

2. Follow the pattern, making crochet stitches into the foundation row.

3. Continue following the pattern or making crochet stitches until your desired length/width.

4. Fasten off and weave in your loose ends.
