Crochet Shark Bookmark Pattern

My three-year-old daughter loves sharks. She has a shark water bottle, a shark blanket and lots of shark stuffed animals. I wanted to crochet her a gift for Christmas and since she also loves books, I thought she’d like a crochet shark bookmark!

This bookmark is a wonderful gift idea for shark enthusiasts of all ages. It’s very simple and fast to make. And it requires very little yarn, making it a great scrap-busting project.

Crochet Bookmark Pattern - Shark

This shark bookmark is quite thin, which is ideal for a bookmark. It’s also reversible and looks great on both sides. The pattern includes detailed step-by-step instructions and diagrams. Hope you enjoy making it!

Size

The pattern creates a bookmark that is approx. 7” long and 3” wide.

Crochet Shark Bookmark Pattern

Materials

Yarn: Any size 3 (light) yarn. You will need approx. 20 yds / 5 g of grey, 2 yds / 1 g of white and 16” of black.*

I used Patons Beehive Baby Sport Yarn in the colors “Baby Grey” and “Angel White.” This yarn is 70% acrylic and 30% nylon. A skein is 304 yds / 328 m and 3 oz / 85 g.

*For the 16” strand of black yarn, you can use size 3 or size 4 yarn. I used Impeccable by Loops & Threads.

Crochet Hook Size: F/5 (3.75 mm).

Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sts = stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • RS = right side (front)
  • WS = wrong side (back)
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • tr = triple/treble crochet
  • sc2tog = single crochet two  together

Gauge

After Row 20, work should measure 4” long (exact sizing is not important).

Pattern Notes

  • Always work into the first stitch (the stitch attached to the chain).
  • Chains never count as stitches.
  • In this pattern, single crochet two together (sc2tog) is worked over two stitches, making a decrease. If sc2tog is new to you, here’s how to do it: insert your hook in the first designated stitch. Yarn over and pull through a loop (2 loops on your hook). Insert your hook in the next designated stitch. Yarn over and pull through a loop (3 loops on your hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through the 3 loops on your hook. This completed sc2tog counts as one stitch.
  • The bookmark is reversible.

Crochet Bookmark Pattern - Shark

Shark Border

Round 1 (RS): Ch 1 and turn. The right side of your work should now be facing up

Working into the sts at the end of each row (not spaces), sc evenly around except to make the shark tail and fin. When making sc sts, the exact st placement and st count are not important. The goal is to have evenly spaced single crochet stitches all around.

Make evenly-spaced sc sts until you get to the first ch made in the pattern. Do not fasten off.

Shark Tail

The shark tail is made by working into the two chain stitches that began the pattern.

Shark Tail

Working into the first ch, sl st. Ch 4. In the same ch, (2 tr, hdc) in the same ch.

In the next ch, (hdc, 2 tr) in the same ch. Ch 4. Sl st into the same ch.

Shark Tail

Resume sc evenly around until you get to the end of Row 13.

Shark Fin

The first st you will work into is at the end of Row 13 (although referred to as stitches, there isn’t an exact stitch to work into – find a place at the end of the row to work into and treat it as a stitch).

In the first st (at the end of Row 13), sl st. Ch 4.

In the next st (at the end of Row 14), make 2 tr in the same st.

In the next st (at the end of Row 15), make 2 dc in the same st.

In the next st (at the end of Row 16), sl st.

Shark Fin

Resume sc evenly around until arriving back at the first sc made in the round. Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.

Fasten off grey.

Shark Teeth

Ensure the RS is still facing up. Attach white yarn in the first st beside where you just joined the grey yarn (on the bottom, on the side opposite of the fin). You will be working away from where you just joined.

Ch 2. Sl st into the next st. [Ch 2. Sl st into the next st.] x 5 (meaning to complete the instructions in brackets a total of 5 times).

Fasten off white.

Shark Teeth

Shark Eyes

Cut a 16” strand of black yarn. Using a yarn needle, embroider a round eye between Rows 26 and 27 in the center of the rows. The yarn should come through both sides so that the eye is visible on the front and back. I made mine by making a plus sign (+) and adding more lines to make a star (*). I continued adding lines to make a round shape.

Fasten off black. Weave in all loose ends.

Blocking (Optional)

Blocking can help correct any curling and help shape your work. To block your finished work, pin it on blocking boards with rust-proof pins, spray it with water and leave it to dry.
