Measuring just the right size to snuggle your precious bundle, the finished blanket is cozy and warm – a perfect companion for naptime, stroller rides, or simply bonding moments on the living room floor. This durable blanket will be a cherished keepsake for years to come!

I’ve called it a “Cozy Cuddles” blanket as it thicker than some of my other baby blanket patterns. Pattern Details

Skill Level

Intermediate

Size

The pattern creates a blanket that is approx. 38” x 38” with the border (approx. 34” x 34” without the border).

Materials

Yarn: Approx. 1,875 yds (660 g) of any size 3 (light) yarn.

I used Baby Cuddles in the color “Neutral Grey.” This yarn is size 3 (light), 70% acrylic and 30% polyamide. A skein is 315 yds / 288 m and 4 oz / 113 g. I used 6 skeins. (For the blanket body: 5 skeins / 1,590 yds (560 g). For the blanket border: 1 skein / 285 yds (100 g)).

Crochet Hook Sizes: For the start and Row 1: J/10 (6.00 mm) and for the remainder of the pattern: H/8 (5.00 mm).  Using a hook that is two sizes up for the start and Row 1 ensures the bottom/start of the blanket is the same width and tension as the rest of the blanket body.

Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sts = stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sk = skip
  • sp = space
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • RS = right side
  • WS = wrong side
  • ch-1 sp = chain one space
  • FPdc = front post double crochet
  • BPdc = back post double crochet

Gauge

4” x 4” = 3 Dc-Shells (12 dc sts) and 11 rows following the pattern for the blanket body.

Pattern Notes

  • Chains never count as stitches.
  • This pattern is made from the chain row up. The number of starting chains determines the width and the number of rows determines the height. To adjust the width, make more or less starting chains in multiples of 4 + 2 (take any number that you can divide by 4 and then add 2 to that number). To adjust the height, make more or less rows.

Special Stitches

Hdc-Shell = (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in the same stitch.

Dc-Shell = (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the same space.

Stitch Explanations

For Rounds 3 – 5 of the border, you will be making front and back post stitches. If these stitches are new to you, here’s how to make them:

Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc):

Yarn over, insert your hook from the front to the back at the right of the designated stitch and bring your hook out at the left of the same stitch. Then finish your double crochet stitch as you normally would: yarn over and pull through a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook (2 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through the last two loops on your hook.

Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc):

Yarn over, insert your hook from the back to the front at the right of the designated stitch and bring your hook out at the left of the same stitch. Then finish your double crochet stitch as you normally would: yarn over and pull through a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook (2 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through the last two loops on your hook.

Where to crochet in the chain

Row 1 (RS): In the second ch from hook, sc. Sc in each ch across. (101 sc sts).

Repeat from * to * across until there are 4 sts left.

Sk the next 3 sts.

In the last st, make 2 hdc.

(Stitch count: Hdc-Shell x 24 (= 96 hdc) + 3 hdc = 99 sts. Reminder: chains never count as sts).

Cozy Cuddles Baby Blanket Work In Progress

Do not fasten off. Begin the blanket border.

Blanket Border

Ensure you have just completed a repeat of Row 5 (a RS row – the starting tail should be on the left).

Border Round 1 (RS): Ch 1. Do not turn.

  • Side (Down): Working down the side and into sts at the end of each row, sc evenly down until the last st.

Need help with where to work into? I made 1 sc into the top of each dc and 1 sc into the bottom of that dc. I had approx. the same number of sc sts as the number of rows (exact number of sts is not important). You can work under 1 or 2 loops of the sts – just ensure you are working into the stitches (not into the space around the stitch).

  • First Corner: In the last st down the side (near the first row of sc sts), make 3 sc in the same st.
  • Bottom: Sc in each ch across the bottom.
  • Second Corner: In the first st up the side, (near the first row of sc sts), make 3 sc in the same st.
  • Side (Up): Working up the side, sc evenly up. (Same instructions as working down the side except that I made 1 sc in each dc and 1 sc in each ch-2).
  • Third Corner: In the top of the first dc st on the top, make 3 sc in the same st.
  • Top: Working into the tops of dc sts only (skipping over every ch-1), sc across until the last st.
  • Fourth Corner: In the top of the last dc on the top, make 3 sc in the same st.

Sl st in the top of the first sc made in the round to join.

Border Round 2 (RS): Ch 2. Do not turn. In the first st (the st attached to the ch-2), dc. Dc in each st around except at the corners. At each corner (the middle st of the 3 sc sts made in each corner in the previous round), make 9 dc in the same st. (It’s okay for the corners to “balloon” out – that will be fixed as the border grows).

After working all the way around, before joining the round, count your sts (the ch-2 that started the round does not count as a stitch). You need to have an odd number of sts in total at the end of Round 2.

If you have an odd number of sts, proceed to join.

If you have an even number of sts, make another dc in the last st, then proceed to join.

Join: sl st into the top of the first dc made in the round.

Border Round 3 (RS): Ch 2. Do not turn. FPdc around the first st from the round below (not the ch-2 from below. The ch-2 from below is never worked around). *BPdc around the next st from the round below. FPdc around the next st from the round below.* Repeat from * to * around. Nothing special happens at the corners. Your last st is a FPdc around the last dc from the round below. Sl st into the top of the first FPdc to join.

Border Round 4 (RS): Ch 2. Do not turn. FPdc around the first st below (the FPdc from the round below). The ch-2 from below is not worked around. *BPdc around the next st below (the next BPdc from the round below). FPdc around the next st below (the next FPdc from the round below).* Repeat from * to * around. Nothing special happens at the corners. Your last st is a FPdc around the last FPdc from the round below. Sl st into the top of the first FPdc to join.

Border Round 5 (RS): Repeat Round 4.

After finishing Border Round 5, fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

Fixing Gaps

You may notice small gaps/holes from the start and end of the blanket body. You can easily fix this with your yarn needle and a long strand of yarn (approx. 3 times the width of your blanket). Use your needle to weave the strand between rows to tighten up any gaps. At the start, weave the strand between the first row (of sc sts) and the third row. At the end, weave the strand between the second last row and the first round of the border. Weave in loose ends.
