Size

The pattern creates a coaster that is approx. 5” wide (not including the ears).

Materials

Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) yarn in any two colors. For each coaster, you will need approx. 30 yds for the main color and 6 yds for the contrasting color.

I used Impeccable by Loops & Threads. This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic yarn. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz / 127.5 g. For the main color, I used “Smoke” (grey), “Pumpkin” (orange) and “Soft Taupe” (light brown). For the contrasting color, I used “Black.”

Crochet Hook Size: H/8 (5.00 mm) hook.

Other Materials: Yarn/tapestry needle, scissors, a measuring tape, fabric glue and felt in black and white (a small amount of felt for the nose and eyes. Optional: a 7” x 7” piece of felt for the back of each coaster).

Pattern Notes

  • Always work into the first stitch (the stitch attached to the chain).
  • Chains never count as stitches.

Stitch Explanations

When making the ears, you will be making single crochet stitches together. These are not special stitches but just in case they are new to you, here’s how to make them:

Single Crochet Two Together (sc2tog):

The instructions say: “Over the next 2 sts, sc2tog.”

Insert your hook into the next st. YO and pull through a loop (2 loops on your hook). Insert your hook into the next st. YO and pull through a loop (3 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through the 3 loops on your hook. This completed sc2tog counts as one stitch.

Single Crochet Three Together (sc3tog)

The instructions say: “Over the next 3 sts, sc2tog.”

Insert your hook into the next st. YO and pull through a loop (2 loops on your hook). Insert your hook into the next st. YO and pull through a loop (3 loops on your hook). Insert your hook into the next st. YO and pull through a loop (4 loops on your hook). YO and pull the yarn through the 4 loops on your hook. This completed sc3tog counts as one stitch.
