Pattern Details

Skill Level

Easy to Intermediate

Size

The pattern creates a bag that is approx. 12” high, 19” wide and 4” deep with straps that are 8” away from the bag.

Size

Materials

Yarn: This pattern is worked with two strands of yarn held together for the entire pattern. You can either separate your yarn manually or use multiple skeins.

You can use any size 4 (medium) yarn.

I used Bernat Super Value. This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 440 yds / 402 m and 4 oz / 197 g.

Here are the amounts of yarn required and the colors I used:

  • Main Color (Beige – “Topaz”) – 770 yds (2 skeins of 385 yds).
  • Bottom Stripe Color (Blue – “Aqua”) – 150 yds (2 skeins of 75 yds).
  • Middle Stripe Color (Green – “Lush”) – 150 yds (2 skeins of 75 yds).
  • Top Stripe Color (Fuchsia – “Rich Orchid”)* – 150 yds (2 skeins of 75 yds).

*For the top stripe, I used Impeccable yarn by Loops & Threads, which is quite similar to Bernat Super Value.

Crochet Hook Size: K/10.5 (6.50 mm)

Other Materials: stitch markers, pins, yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.

Crochet Beach Bag Pattern

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sts = stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet

Gauge

4” x 4” = 11 sc and 13 rows made in the round.

Pattern Notes

  • This beach bag is made from the bottom up. The bottom and body are worked in the round. The straps are sewn into the inside of the finished body.
  • Do not turn unless instructed otherwise.
  • Chains never count as stitches.
  • Always work into the first stitch unless instructed otherwise. If the instructions for the beginning of the round say “next st,” work into the first stitch.
  • Always put a stitch marker in the top of the first sc of every round to help ensure you start and end in the right place and you have the correct number of sts.
  • When the instructions say “[2 sc in next st. Sc in next st.] x 2,” what this means is to complete the steps in brackets a total of two times (i.e. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next st. 2 sc in next st. Sc in next st.).
  • When changing colors put the new color on your hook and pull it through the loop of the current color on your hook. Fasten off old color.
  • Continue using the color indicated until instructed to change colors.

Sl st into the top of the first sc to join. (After Round 2, work should measure approx. 12.5” long x 1.5” wide).

Round 3: Ch 1. 2 sc in next 2 sts. Sc in next 30 sts. 2 sc in next 5 sts. Sc in next 30 sts. 2 sc in next 3 sts. (80 sts). Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.

Round 4: Ch 1. [2 sc in next st. Sc in next st.] x 2. Sc in next 30 sts. [2 sc in next st. Sc in next st.] x 5. Sc in next 30 sts. [2 sc in next st. Sc in next st.] x 3. (90 sts). Sl st into the top of the first sc to join. (After Round 4, work should measure approx. 14” long x 3” wide).

Round 5: Ch 1. [2 sc in next st. Sc in next 2 sts.] x 2. Sc in next 30 sts. [2 sc in next st. Sc in next 2 sts.] x 5. Sc in next 30 sts. [2 sc in next st. Sc in next 2 sts.] x 3. (100 sts). Sl st into top of the first sc to join.

Round 6: Ch 1. Sc in next 5 sts. In next st, 2 sc. Sc in next 36 sts. [2 sc in next st. Sc in next 5 sts.] x 3. Sc in next 34 sts. In next st, 2 sc. Sc in next 4 sts. Sk the last st. (104 sts). Sl st into the top of the first sc to join. (After Round 6, work should measure approx. 16” long  x 4” wide (4” in the middle and 4.5” on ends)).

Round 7: Ch 1. Sc in the back loops only (the loops furthest away from you) of each st around. (104 sts). Sl st into both loops of the top of the first sc to join.

Bottom

Do not fasten off. The round numbers will now reset to make it easier to count rounds from the bottom up.

Note: As you work on the beach bag body, you will notice that the right side (the top) of the bottom you just completed will be facing down and will be on the outside bottom of the beach bag.

Crochet Beach Bag Body – Joining Notes

The body of the Beach Bag uses a special joining technique called “Reverse Slip Stitch (reverse sl st), which creates a straight seam that is hardly noticeable.

Sides

Here’s how to “join with a reverse sl st:”

After your last stitch of the round, withdraw hook from your work, leaving the loops as is. Remove the stitch marker from the first stitch made in the round (that’s the stitch you’ll be working into). Insert your hook from back to front into that first stitch. Place the loop back on your hook and pull the loop through the stitch (towards the inside of your work). Pull the yarn tight.

Do not chain. Unless instructed otherwise, start the next round by working into the same stitch as the reverse slip stitch. (Remember to put a stitch marker in the top of the first stitch made).

Reverse Slip Stitch

Round 1: Ch 1. (Reminders: don’t turn unless instructed to. Always place a stitch marker in the top of the first sc made). Sc in each st around. (104 sts). Join with a reverse sl st.

Round 2: Sc in each st around. (104 sts). Join with a reverse sl st.

Rounds 3 – 7: Repeat Round 2.

Round 8: Change to Bottom Stripe Color. Fasten off Main Color. Sc in each st around. (104 sts). Join with a reverse sl st.

Round 9: Repeat Round 2.

Sides

Round 10: Turn. (It’s okay if your yarn is in front of your work). In the first st, sl st loosely. (Put stitch marker in top of sl st). In the next st, hdc. *In the next st, sl st loosely. In the next st, hdc.* Repeat from * to * around. (104 sts). Join with a reverse sl st.

Note: you might find that as your work grows this round “caves in” or “folds” a little. This will be fixed when the straps are attached.

Round 11: Turn. (It’s okay if your yarn is in front of your work). Sc in the first st (the top of the last hdc from the previous round). Sc in each st around. (104 sts). Join with a reverse sl st.

Round 12: Repeat Round 2.

Round 13: Change to Main Color. Fasten off Bottom Stripe Color. Sc in each st around. (104 sts). Join with a reverse sl st.

Strap Placement

Use the starting and ending tails of each color change to attach the straps to the inside of the bag.

After attaching the straps, you can tuck the tails/loose ends in between the straps and the bag to hide them.
