You could also make this basket, fill it with goodies and give it as a thoughtful homemade Christmas gift.
It’s sure to become a staple pattern in your Christmas crocheting!
Crochet Christmas Basket Pattern
This Crochet Christmas Basket Pattern is quick and very easy to make. It creates a basket that is 5″ wide and the pattern includes instructions for making it bigger.

The basket bottom and sides are made with two strands of yarn held together, which creates a thick, sturdy basket. If you have never worked with two strands of yarn held together before, don’t be intimidated. You simply hold both strands at the same time, treat them as one and crochet normally. It’s okay for them to twist – that’s what creates a dense fabric, perfect for a basket.

Christmas Basket Crochet Pattern Details
Skill Level
Easy
Size
The pattern creates a basket that is approx. 5” wide and 3.5” high.

Materials
Yarn: The basket (except the top and belt buckle) is made with two strands of yarn held together so you can either separate your yarn manually or use two skeins.
You can any size 4 (medium) yarn. You will need approx. 100 yds of red in total (50 yds / 22 g and 50 yds / 22 g when separated) and 24 yds of black in total (12 yds / 5 g and 12 yds / 5 g when separated). I used Impeccable Solid by Loops & Threads, which is 100% acrylic. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz / 127.5 g.
For the top, you can use any size 5 (bulky) white yarn. You will need approx. 8 yds (you only need one strand). I used Bernat Pipsqueak in “Whitey White.” A skein is 101 yds / 92 m and 3.50 oz. / 100 g.
For the belt buckle, you can use any size 4 (medium) golden yellow yarn (you only need one strand). You will need approx. 3 yards. I used Impeccable in the color “Sunny Day.”
Crochet Hook Size: K/10.5 (6.50 mm) for the basket and F/5 (3.75 mm) for the belt buckle.
Other Materials: yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.

Christmas Crochet Basket Pattern Instructions
Basket Bottom
Start: With a K/10.5 (6.50 mm) hook and two strands of red yarn held together, make a Magic Circle. Continue using red yarn until instructed to change.
Round 1: Ch 1. In the Magic Circle, make 10 hdc. Pull the end of Magic Circle tight to close. (10 sts made. Reminder: chains never count as sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join.
Round 2: Ch 1. Do not turn. (Reminder: always work in the first stitch unless instructed otherwise). Make 2 hdc in each st around. (20 sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join.
Round 3: Ch 1. Do not turn. *In the next st, 2 hdc. In the next st, hdc.* Repeat from * to * around. (30 sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join.
After Round 3, work should measure 3.75”. Measurements don’t need to be exact.
Round 4: Ch 1. Do not turn. *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * around. (40 sts). Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join.
After Round 4, work should measure 5” across.
Do not fasten off. The round numbers will now reset to make it easier to count rounds from the bottom up.
Note: The right side (the top) of the bottom you just completed will continue to face up.

Making the Basket Bigger
If you want to make the basket bottom bigger, you can continue making rounds. Always ch 1 and do not turn. Repeat the instructions below from * to * around. Then sl st into the top of the first hdc to join.
- *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 3 sts.* (50 sts)
- *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 4 sts.* (60 sts)
- *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 5 sts.* (70 sts)
- *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 6 sts.* (80 sts)
When you have reached your desired size, proceed to the basket sides instructions. The basket sides will have the same number of stitches as your final round of the bottom. (Note that if you make the basket bigger, you will require more yarn).

Basket Sides
Continue using a K/10.5 (6.50 mm) hook and two strands of yarn.
Round 1: Ch 1 and turn. For this round only, your first stitch is the top of the last hdc you completed (not the sl st that is attached to the chain). Sc in the back loops only (the loops furthest away from you) of each st around. (40 sts). Sl st into both loops of the top of the first sc made in the round to join.
Round 2: Ch 1. Do not turn. Sc in each st around. (40 sts). Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.
Round 3: Change colors: attach two strands of black yarn. Fasten off red. With black, ch 1. Do not turn. Sc in each st around. (40 sts). Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.
Round 4: Still with black, ch 1. Do not turn. Sc in each st around. (40 sts). Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.
Round 5: Change colors: attach two strands of red yarn. Fasten off black. With red, ch 1. Do not turn. Sc in each st around. (40 sts). Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.
Round 6: Still with red, ch 1. Do not turn. Sc in each st around. (40 sts). Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.
Round 7: Repeat Round 6.
Round 8: Change colors: attach one strand of size 5 (bulky) white yarn. Fasten off red. With white, ch 1. Do not turn. Sc in each st around. (40 sts). Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.
Round 9: Still with white, ch 1. Do not turn. Sc in each st around. (40 sts). Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.
Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.

Belt Buckle
Start: With an F/5 (3.75 mm) hook and one strand of golden yellow yarn, chain 23.
For Row 1, work into the back ridge loops.

Row 1: In the second ch from hook, make 3 sl sts into the same ch (first corner made).
Sl st in the next 3 chains.
In the next ch, make 3 sl sts into the same ch (second corner made).
Sl st in the next 6 chains.
In the next ch, make 3 sl sts into the same ch (third corner made).
Sl st in the next 3 chains.
In the next ch, make 3 sl sts into the same ch (fourth corner made).
Sl st in the next 6 chains.
(30 sl sts made).
Sl st into the first sl st made to join.
Fasten off, leaving a 12″ tail.
