Easy Crochet Bookmark Pattern Free
This free and easy bookmark crochet pattern may become your go-to quick crochet project from now on. It makes a wonderful crochet gift idea for any occasion and any recipient. Who doesn’t need or love a bookmark!
This easy crochet bookmark pattern makes a bookmark that is approx. 2″ wide by 7″ high but the size is completely customizable. There are three average sizes for a bookmark: 2″ x 6″, 2″ x 7″ and 2″ x 8. I chose to make mine 7″ high, which is right in the middle but all you need to do to make yours shorter or taller is make less or fewer rows. To make your bookmark thinner or wider, make less or more starting chains in multiples of 2 + 1 (meaning that your number of starting chains will be an odd number).
Best Yarn for this Easy Crochet Bookmark
I recommend using a size 3, light yarn. You can also use size 2 yarn but you may need to make more starting chains to increase the width and make more rows to reach your desired height. Or, you can use size 4, worsted weight as long as it’s on the lighter side (some brands of size 4 yarn can be a little chunky and you don’t want your bookmark to be too thick for the book). You can use acrylic yarn or cotton yarn or really any type of yarn to make this bookmark.
I used Paton’s Canadiana, which is technically a size 4 worsted weight yarn but I find it very thin compared to other worsted weight yarns and perfect to use for this easy crochet bookmark.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Bookmark?
This easy crochet bookmark takes under 30 minutes (approximately) to make from start to finish. It is one of the quickest crochet projects I’ve ever completed. Because you can make it so quickly, it’s a great item to sell at craft shows or to make as gifts as you can make a lot of them in a short period of time.
Crochet Bookmark Pattern for Beginners
If you are just learning to crochet and are wondering how to crochet a bookmark, this a great tutorial to learn. If you know how to chain and single crochet, you can easily make this bookmark! The pattern includes step by step instructions as well as a full video tutorial, making it a great crochet bookmark pattern for beginners.
Moss Stitch Bookmark
This pattern is made using just basic stitches (chain and single crochet) and when these stitches are combined, it is called the moss stitch (sometimes called the linen stitch). Don’t be afraid, it’s one of the easiest stitches to learn and is very beginner friendly. It’s one of my favorite stitches and I used in my Crochet Keychain Buddy, Moss Stitch Baby Blanket and Easy Crochet Table Runner patterns.

Easy Crochet Bookmark Pattern Details
Easy – Beginner Friendly
The pattern creates a bookmark that is 2″ wide x 7″ high. Instructions for adjusting the width and height are included in the pattern.
1″ wide x 2″ high = 3 stitches and 9 rows (following the pattern)
Yarn: Each bookmark requires approx. 25 yds of yarn. I recommend using size 3 light yarn. You could also use size 2 yarn but you may need to make more starting chains and more rows. Or, you can use size 4 yarn if it’s not too thick. You can use yarn of any type (acrylic, cotton, etc.)
I used Patons Canadiana (100% acrylic, 3.5 oz / 100 g, 205 yds / 187 m), which is technically a size 4 but is quite thin and seems more like a size 3 yarn. I used the colors Cherished Pink, Pale Teal, Cherished Green, Aran (beige) and Pale Grey Mix.
Crochet Hook Size: F/5 (3.75 mm).
Other Materials: scissors, yarn needle and measuring tape.
The pattern is written in English for right-handed crochet using US terminology. If you are more familiar with UK terminology, check out my US to UK Conversion Chart.
ch = chain
st = stitch
sts = stitches
sk = skip
sc = single crochet
How to Adjust the Size
The bookmark is made from the chain row up. To make the width of the bookmark bigger or smaller, adjust the number of starting chains in multiples of 2 + 1 (meaning that your number of starting chains should be an odd number). To make the height of the bookmark bigger or smaller, make more or fewer rows.

How to Crochet a Bookmark
Easy Crochet Bookmark Pattern Instructions
Start: Chain 11.
Row 1: In the 3rd ch from hook, sc (the space between your chains and the sc creates your first gap space, which will be important in the next row). *Ch 1. Sk the next ch. In the next ch, sc (gap space created).* Repeat from * to * across row. (Your final st is a sc in the last ch of the row). (5 sc made. 5 gap spaces created).
Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. In the 1st gap space from the previous row, sc (gap space created). *Ch 1. In the next gap space from the previous row, sc (gap space created).* Repeat from * to * across row. (Your final st is a sc in the space between the last sc and the first two starting chains from the first row). (5 sc made. 5 gap spaces created).
Row 3: Ch 2 and turn. In the 1st gap space from the previous row, sc (gap space created). *Ch 1. In the next gap space from the previous row, sc (gap space created).* Repeat from * to * across row. (Your final st is a sc in the space between the last sc and the two turning chains from the previous row). (5 sc made. 5 gap spaces created).
Row 4 and on: Repeat Row 3 until your work measures approx. 7” (approximately 30 rows in total) or your desired height. All rows have the same number of stitches/gap spaces.
You can end after any number of rows (it doesn’t matter which side you end on).
After reaching your desired height, fasten off and weave in loose ends.
Adding Fringe / Tassels
Learn how to add fringe / tassels to your bookmark (and how to trim the ends perfectly!). All the details for the tassels for this Easy Bookmark pattern are included below this video.
You can also read this guide to How to Add Fringe / Tassels to your Crochet Project with step-by-step written instructions.
Adding Tassels to the Bookmark
You will attach four tassels to the chain row (the bottom) of the bookmark, with one on each corner and two in the middle, all spaced evenly apart.
You can attach the tassels on either side (front or back). Just ensure you attach them all on the same side so that the front of each knot is facing in the same direction.
Prepare yarn: cut 12 strands of yarn that are all approx. 8″ long.
A) Take three strands of yarn, fold them in half and with your hook, pull the folded ends through the stitch (which creates a loop).
B) Pull the ends through the loop.
C) Pull tight to make a knot.
Repeat for each tassel.
Trim the strands to make them all one length. I cut mine to be approx. 2″. You can use scissors or you can try this brilliant technique (pictured above) to get perfectly even ends – learn how in this guide on How to Add Fringe / Tassels to your Crochet Project.
And now you have a new bookmark!
